Since I sat my test 23 years ago at 17!!
Coming up to a roundabout behind another car, looking left to see if clear, the car in front went onto roundabout then stopped suddenly and I hit it.
My fault obviously!, (never admitted this at the time but I know how these things work.
The girl whose car I hit was very upset, her car was drivable and I eventually got her too move it off the roundabout and then I pished mine into the same smaller junction.
Both my airbags went off and my arms are burnt and my forehead is bruised and cut with airbag, neck is sore as is shoulder.
After I managed to calm her down and she phoned her elderly parents to come down I made sure she was ok and her parents asked what happened.
Before I could say anything she said "I went to go onto roundabout and at the last minute saw a red car and panicked and pulled on my handbrake to stop WTF!
Now I know I was behind her and was looking right rather than in front to give way, so its my fault(hypothetically).
But ffs I saw no brake lights coming upto roundabout. The guy in the transit van behind stopped and gave details and actually gave me Arun home saying " I cant believe she did that, she went on to roundabout then seemed to stop for no reason"
He also heard her saying to her parents about pulling on handbrake rather than braking.
I take it I'm still screwed anyway.
My dog/diving £1500 Mazda barge is now dead and beyond repair due to both airbags and state of bumper and front trim(although looks fine!)
Her Pug 306 is deid judging by rear damage.
Her airbags never went off which I though was weird?
Also her parents started to tell her she would probably feel worse tomorrow and not to answer when I asked if she was still ok.
My arms are burned, my forehead is burst(both airbag) and my neck and shoulder is gubbed but I've had worse sparring in the gym.
Phoned my insurance and right away said its my fault, which I kind of agree.
But FFS panic and pull gphandbrake on a roundabout. So no brake lights to guy behind.

Get ready for an incoming whiplash claim! Ridiculous decision to pull the handbrake in any situation where a quick stop is required...

She stopped for nothing but as you ran into the back of her then I think it will be your fault, at least neither of you were badly hurt (until her whiplash claim comes in). Airbags work on sensors in the front of the car for steering wheel as far as I know so that is why hers won't have gone off.

No ifs, buts or maybes....you are at fault. Take it like a man and learn from it.

Similar thing happened to me years ago, accept she stalled it in front of me on a roundabout, bloody women drivers!

Pulling the handbrake up is rather a fail though, and as others have said, a whiplash claim looks inevitable.

Sounds like someone cut her up slightly coming on at the next exit and she stopped dead instead of just slowing down? It's a bit of a daft reaction but seriously, it's your fault, don't be silly about it.
As for the airbags, it's because in a rear end accident you go backwards into your seat.

(Incidentally, this is why all those suggestions about European-style bike-lanes and crossings around roundabouts wouldn't work in the UK)

As some other PHr has said be prepared for a whiplash claim

and if she was a total scumbag she might even claim her elderly parents were in the car with her (seen it happen before even with witnesses)

who the fk using their handbrake instead of brakes

unless you are on a 45 degree hill and your brakes fail then you have no other option

She's no more of an idiot than you are I'm afraid. Let's remember that this accident was your fault, given the airbags deployed you hit her very hard, so yes, expect whiplash, more importantly let's hope you didn't injure her for life eh?

That said, we all make mistakes mate. Good on you for being a man about it.

Strange reaction to grab the handbrake....can't say I've ever done that before!

Just unlucky I guess, but it's inevitably going to come down as your fault since it was rear-ended.

Not PC, but experience has taught me to expect the unexpected when on the same stretch of road as a female. The one guarantee is that they will NOT react to any given situation in a logical or consistent way. That's just the way it is. And yes, I'm afraid you will be blamed for the rear ender.

I have experienced exactly the same. Guy in front of me pulled onto roundabout, I watch him go, then look left right, nothing coming so take off and wham, straight into the back of his Mini. He had stopped on the roundabout because, he subsequently admitted to me, he suddenly wasn't sure which way to go! He then said this was the second time it had happened to him in the last three months - I told him I wasn't surprised rolleyes

Yes, my fault and my insurance coughed up and I lost my NCB. The only excuse I have is that I had only been driving for a year. However, lesson learned and I now always, always look back to ensure the car in front has really gone before proceeding onto roundabouts or out of junctions etc. So (touching wood) I have not come close to a similar incident in the many, many years of driving since although I have had cars perform this manoeuvre in front of me at roundabouts but I've always seen then in plenty of time.

Edited due to the inability to recognise left from right!

Are any CCTV cameras overlooking the junction? I don't know if you can ask for access to them, but it may help.

I don't know if this is just me being cynical, but from your description, it sounds very similar to a typical scam frown

Grrrrr. I hate this whole 'I didn't admit liability at the time because my insurance tells me not too'. WTF. Where has this nonsense come from?
If its your fault then Its your fault and your insurance will pay up.
Any admission of liability at the scene will not be taken into consideration anyway even if its written or recorded as its not admissible in court as you could of been forced into giving it anyway.

Did exactly the same thing 3 years ago.

Coming down a slip round onto a roundabout, woman in a Corsa in front of me decides to stop and let the car 200y ards away go past - I was looking at the same car thinking I can easily get out in front of that too, but no, she stopped and I went into the back of her.

Entirely my fault, and I told her so plus apologised and asked if she was ok.
She was relatively calm about it all, and saying it was ok as she couldn't see any damage but I insisted she take it to a garage and get it checked (turned out the boot floor was creased). Mine needed a bumper, headlight and bonnet.
Luckily though my Protected No Claims took care of it and I suffered no subsequent increase come renewal time.

Yes, people say 'Don't ever admit it', but FFS, it was my fault, she the had to piss about sorting her car out so the least I could do was make it easy for the insurance.

Irrespective of how or why she stopped, the OP should have left enough room to stop. Even if she'd stalled or the engine seized or a wheel fell off or Jesus suddenly appeared in her passenger seat and pulled the handbrake on, the OP should have left enough room.

Hand it all over to the insurance company and let them worry about the impending whiplash claim.

I've had 2 near misses on roundabouts because women have stopped for no reason.
The first i was only doing about 25 mph so she pulls out. If she had kept moving it would have been fine but no she pulls out and stops blocking my exit. So i now need to stop and the car behind me only just stopped aswell. Her reason for stopping was she thought i was going to hit her so she stopped. Stupid cow
The second was on a nsl road with a good view approaching the roundabout. On the approach i could see a car waiting to get on the roundabout but with the traffic coming the other way there would be no need to stop. Wrong the stupid woman stopped half blocking the roundabout. I only just managed to avoid running up the back of her car.

OP you're at fault... end of, I'm afraid.

However, I would be sceptical. Lots of people are very desperate at the minute... they all know full well that one good punt up the rear can bag them £3-5k in compo without trying. They get a payout on their motor, buy a new one, and in a few months time a fat cheque arrives from Fake Whiplash Claims R Us.

Even better, use the handbrake so as not to trigger the brake lights for an even harder punt up the arse.
