I need to replace my aging C70 with a newer one. I should buy a diesel one but to me a sporty car needs a petrol engine...

How many miles do you do?

If I didn't need to do a high mileage there's no way I'd be in a diesel.

C70 ... sporty
Where's that 'not sure if serious' meme again?

Honest answer, if you're doing high mileages I'd go for the diesel and get something a bit more stimulating for the weekends.

'not sure if serious' back at ya.

Really, I said "sporty". Not Sports, or Supercar, GT or Racecar. I think it is fair to say a car which has 1/ a convertible roof and 2/ a decent lump under the bonnet with some get up and go is 'sporty'.

<8,000 miles/pa.

So anything with a bit of an engine and convertible is sporty then?

Has to have a decent lump in it too, and the C70 has a 2.0 or 2.4T. It's "quite good" thus it is "sporty".

The Chrysler PT Cruiser comes with a 2.4 litre petrol lump.

I think you need to rethink your meaning of 'sporty'.

A Volvo, convertible, 2.0 petrol isnt 'sporty' in most peoples books.

Give the OP some kudos for attempting to avoid the default position diesel wink I went from mega commute diesel to a 3 litre petrol as soon as the monstrous mileage ceased. Happy days!

I think "sporty" is more to do with the chassis and other gubbins than the engine...hence the comments.

There are many true "sporty" cars that don't have a slightly better than average engine, MX5, MR2 MK3, Lotus Elise.

The C70 will forever be "Grand Toury", no matter what engine is in there, but this is not bad thing, a petrol C70 with a nice 2.4T is a pleasant car I am sure.

I disagree - a car cannot have a diesel engine and be 'sporty'.

It can be 'quick', 'cover ground rapidly', 'has torque' and so on - all excuses to cover over the fact that the most basic straight 6 from the 1970s/80s is a fantastically enjoyable engine compared to any diesel engine on sale in 2013.

I say should because the diesel ones aren't much more than petrol really (looking at a 2006/7/8 car and I will keep the car 3+ years) with lower emissions and higher mpg. But I like the sound of a petrol engine. Plus, diesel in something sporty just feels wrong......
