Hey up AARONDBS,

But why would this just make a metallic sound and not just blowing ,which usually happens when gasket blown ?

Thanks for that IKarl,

Yep it does have a metal timing chain , rather than those plastic belts they seem to use on modern cars...

Got a 2000 ST200 and had same symptoms. Ran it like that for 18months with no sign of water/oil mix or loss. After investigation it was confirmed to be the head gasket. Apparently it's not unusual of the V6.

Mine did this and it was just pinking. Try taking the MAF sensor out and cleaning it carefully. This sorted mine and gave it a load more power too.

Could be lots of things. No-one here can say anything definitive without a load more info.

Could be a lifter, could be a pulley or ancillary, could be chain/tensioner etc etc...

I would put money on it being HG chuff/exhaust manifold blow. Ive had 6 of them lol - if something else was wrong with it you would know about it. They chuff from the HG right below the manifold either on the back or front of the engine, and the manifolds are an absolute arse of a job.

Listen to this video and see if its similar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr1VlHlwVy8.

Could well be the exhaust manifold gasket. That was the initial diagnosis on mine which could have been perfectly valid but once my garage got underway with the works it became apparent it was the HG at the back. Access is cramped so it’s not that easy to be certain what’s blowing without close inspection.

Was an engine out job!

Good luck with it either way.

11 hours work? I didnt think it was that bad. I do know they are a pig of a job - depending if its front or rear manifold depends what you need to do. Think its the rear ones the alternator needs to come out and both require all the engine mounts to be undone so you can twist the engine to access stuff.

My advice? Keep driving it. Your not going to do anymore damage by driving it. If its exhaust manifold then it will just keep chuffing away. If its head gasket it will get progressively worse till one morning it just refuses to start. Then you can evaluate whether the cars worth a HG change or bang a new lump in or get rid completely.

I agree,
On the ones I have done(I`ve had many and still have 3 Duratec V6 cars)
If you look at the head gaskets, where the fire ring is on the front cylinders on the ex manifold side there is a small hole next to it at the thin part of the gasket, which is covered completely by the head but only half covered by the block when fitted.
From underneath you can see clearly that half the hole is visible, this is the exact point they leak from, right next to the exhaust manifold flange,on the later 2.49 version the holes are not there.
This has been diagnosed as a leaking manifold/gasket many times,
The dismay that must be felt after changing the manifolds and or gaskets only to find the problem is still there alone makes it worth getting it right the first time.

And it`s not that bad a job, don`t let people convince you the engine has to come out to do the heads,it`s not true and the manifolds are not as bad to do as people seem to say either.

Whenever I bought a Duratec V6 the first thing I did was change that cack water pump for a metal bladed one.

I'd presume most places can do this, but I had it done at a Ford dealer, anyway I suspected head gasket failure on my old Mondeo V6 and they did a coolant poisoning test by putting a thing on the header tank. Apparently it does a chemical test for the presence of exhaust gas in the cooling system. I was right, gasket failure, and the car went in the bin.

It may be worth having that done? At least you'd know how serious the problem was before dismantling the wrong bit.

11 hours is ridiculous to change an exhaust manifold on these.

You'll get a manifold for buttons for one of these if you ask on UKCougar or a Mondeo forum. Many have replaced these with tubular headers and have the cast iron headers c/w precats lying about.

I've replaced manifolds on the Duratec 25 personally. Fiddly job, but not 11 hours. Maybe 11 hours for both if it's your first time. The front bank is a dawdle. The rear is a bit fiddly (as in you need a different combination of spanners, sockets, UJs and different extensions for each stud) but it's not hard - and doesn't need 11 hours.
