I'm looking to buy a Renault Clio 172 or 182, probably an 02 / 03 model (not sure of the exact years these were made).

What are the pitfalls of owning one of these, apart from fuel consumption of course!

And advice appreciated.

TIA.

Fuel consumption? Mine's sitting on 33 from from mixed driving. 42+ is possible on a run.

Not many tbh.

Timing belt cost is a big one...

Pitfalls include the French bit, from what friends who have owned Renaults have experienced before...

Crap driving position
Rubbish build quality
Hideous steering wheel
Noise heavy handling
Coarse engine
Crappy cold rev limiter
Drive by wire throttle on all but phase 1
Chavvy image
Weak gearboxes and crap gear change
Not particularly great brakes

Other than that they're OK I suppose.

Great mpg
Excellent fun
Low overall running costs
Brilliant chassis
Can embarrass expensive machinery

If you're lucky.

If not, bye bye savings....

Depends whether you get a good one or a shed. I have a 52 reg 172. Owned for 18 months. Bought as a 1 owner from new, decent history, bills etc. I had the cambelt and dephaser done as due, and then the clutch went. Add a set of discs and pads all round, a backbox, and the bills totalled £1300. Within 3 months of buying it. For £1600. I was severely gutted.

Since then, in the last 12 months, it has cost me nothing. Fuel, polish, screenwash, nothing more. I can't complain. If driven sensibly, i see 40+mpg. If thrashed, I see 30+mpg. I can live with it

Mine has been faultless. The only criticisms I could level are that the clutch is heavy in traffic and there is quite a bit of road noise. The fuel economy is very good given the performance (I average 40mpg), the performance and handling are superb and in 3 years and over 30k miles the only thing that's gone wrong is a broken spring. I would totally recommend one. Mine will actually be for sale soon but only reluctantly as I need the money for a big 4x4.

Ah, a new clio could really spoil the new car thing.

Mine were 4&5 years old and while completely reliable they were was never a day without a little niggle.

they are so cheap to fix though, shameless copy and past of my own previous post.....

think that when buying a Clio 1*2 the best thing to buy is the most looked after car or a dog with good bodywork.Nothing between, £1K goes a long way on them to rectifying the usual problems.

Pair rear damper £100
Pair front w/bones with b/joint and bushes £50
Powerflex kit for the dogbone £50
Strut top mount £100 pair
Reconed rear callipers £100 pair
New front calliper £150 pair

That £500 would absolutely transform a dog to a right laugh of a car.

Must admit mind, mine bankrupted me but really I was probably closer to having a new car when I gave up on it... There really was no end in sight to the issues at the time but I was probably fairly close to having it sorted. But I did spend a lot of money.

My son has a 1.2 which I drive on occasion, and this is what prompted me to consider a 172.

For what it is (1.2) it handles pretty well, and I find it fun to drive, but as you say - the steering wheel is a bit hideous (and looks to be very similar to the one on the 172).

My current car is a 3.0 A4 Quattro - so there's a huge distinction between what I have, and what I'm thinking about getting.

My other car is a Honda Accord Coupe - and I have considered trading that for a Clio instead of the Audi, but I'm undecided...

I've had a 1.2 and a 1.5 DCI courtesy car, they handled at least as well as the the 172 IMO just with obviously lower limits. Both had less grip and felt more balanced in a way benefited the car. The 172 was reasonably good in a straight line up to a point though, used to surprise a few things.

Definitely worth reading TRD's Clio thread. It's put me off ever buying a Renault!

Guessing by the title you want info on 200SX too, depends on model as some S14's and the S13s had the CA18 and later have the SR20det.

Good engines, rust is the biggest issues! Will need mods to become an involving drive. Suspension, inter cooler, induction, fuel pump and a map and you'll be laughing! Best car I've had (out of not many i admit) but I love it!

Had a 172, a 182 and a 197. 172 and 182 were brilliant. 197 was so so.

All reliable though with no issuse worth talking about.

Great on fuel except 197 which was crap.
