Not really thought about this before. Long story short, I'm moving from my rental flat into a friends as my tenancy is up and the friend is going abroad for a few months. Perfect to save some cash.

It is however on the coast 70 mile commute into London. The initial plan was to buy a sub £1000 car such as a 306 diesel and then sell it after two months but after roughly calculating the outgoings I was looking at renting.

Petrol costs at a guess will be around £250 a month, insurance £30 a month or around £300 in total and then of course oil and other bits and bobs. So I put it around the £300 mark.

So I've only just looked at renting a car, a quick look shows £300 a month for one of those fuel efficient type cars
with 70+mpg. (there may be a hidden cost with this as I'm reading now)

So would it be worth renting?

You've still got the cost of fuel to put on renting a car?

No car actually does 70mpg. If the blurb says 70, it does 50.

I can easily achieve 65-68 mpg (calculated, not just OBC) on a several hour run, so I'd say you're wrong.

My Fabia TDi manages 55mpg with ease, and it's 8 years old.

Yes, I was going by the figures they state. I know nothing of these new eco friendly/super mpg claimed cars but if this was the case, fuel would be nowhere near what I'd be paying on the Pug. Review sites have it at over 80mpg

I think the above one was wrong, this is the diesel version, I've searched and seems to be over 80mpg Whatcar/parkers

Are you in 1997? Modern small capacity engined cars are easily capable of doing it, and do. Even petrols.

bks. Unless you're Miss Daisy's chauffeur. I've had several claimed 60+ mpg cars and they got nowhere near.

It's a 1.0 Up!. Autocar managed 60 on a run, and I average around that. If I stick behind a lorry at 55 and feather the throttle then I've seen even 80 on the OBC, not that I believe that, but I've worked it out to be at least ~68. Do you want me to attach a few pictures, or do you want me to pick you up and take you to Watford and back?

Basically yes, 70 is possible.

Then it's your driving not the car wink

Easy to get 65-70 out of most modern small diesel/petrol engine cars.

You'll never get the claimed fuel consumption, but getting mid 60's is easy if you don't drive like a pillock.

I didn't say it was fast or glamorous, I said it was possible. Jesus Christ it's hard work on here sometimes.

Not true.

I am not a nun, I don't drive like one.

I am under 30, straight, a little overweight and like to listen to loud music on the way to work and my car averages 65.4mpg.
