Fuel duty when electric cars are commonplace?
Discussion
£30bn/year is a lot of money. There will be a time when electric cars are everywhere and that duty will no longer be there.
How will the government of the day make up for the fall?
Smart charging points with a taxable levy?
Ramp up the cost of electricity?
Even bigger taxation on petrol/diesel?
V.E.D at £2k/year on all cars?
Road charging via GPS tracking?
I reckon that in five years we'll see 15% of new car sales being electric models. Ten years 50%.
How will this play out over the coming 20 years?

Hmm, generating my own electricity with a petrol generator may become economically viable then! Might upset the neighbors a tad though.
Hmm, you might be on to something there. Perhaps I should buy a dirt cheap Toyota Prius with knackered batteries and a big set of jump leads to charge up my new all electric car ?budfox said:

The cost of Electric is already being ramped up.How will the government of the day make up for the fall?

Taxation on petrol/diesel is & has been increasing for quite a while.
Ved increases every year & there will be less & less of exempt vehicles.
Don't know about gps but there is already road charging on a smaller scale even if it's called congestion charging, bridge tolls etc.
So to answer your question, all of the above & everything you suggested & lots more I can imagine.

Road charging via GPS, the tech is way further ahead than most people are aware and the EU is spending lots to make it a reality.
Expect an EU wide road charge that the EU collects as well as other local state charges like VED and congestion zones.
I wouldn't be so sure about our integration into the EU. I can see a few signs of us starting to push away from their control, eg, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2455549/Br...Expect an EU wide road charge that the EU collects as well as other local state charges like VED and congestion zones.

Thanks, always like a nice chuckle before bed.
I could see them being the norm within larger cities as commuter vehicles or second cars, depends on the tax breaks involved. Certainly still not practical for anything approximating a ICE replacement. Thanks, always like a nice chuckle before bed.
The national grid is already creaking at the seams, until other forms of electricity generation can be introduced quickly and at relatively low cost, it is many years until we have a significant number of electric cars - we just could not power them all.
Sales of the hybrid / cars with on board chargers will continue to expand and become more common, perhaps in 10 years they may take up a significant proportion of new car sales.
Petrol / Oil is still relatively cheap - the tax and duties on it make it expensive. Oil is still abundant, massive infrastructure is in place to exploit and distribute it, and it is easy to tax. Petrol & diesel will continue to be the norm for many years to come. Tolls & GPS tracking will become more widespread along with vehicle recognition systems from road mounted camera's - taxes will continue to increase and the Government will keep moving one step closer to Big Brother in order to ensure we are all easier to manage!
