Taxing a car on the green slip
Discussion
In the 90s I ran a car showroom so any cars I purchased for resale I drove on trade plates. Before I started the garage though, I registered every car I bought for resale in my own name and taxed each car. This caused quite a delay in turning around stock as occasionally, back then, it took 6 weeks to receive the new log book in my name and 3 got lost in the post. I am considering buying and selling cars in my spare time but I do not expect to sell enough to qualify for trade plates again.
When I sold my own personal car last year, the guy who bought it produced a tax disc by only using the green slip.
I have been reading the registration document of my own car (V5 dated March 2011) and I see on the back of the green slip that it is now possible to tax a car once using the green slip only. Is this correct as when my dad bought a car about 5 years ago with the green slip only (due to a previous cherished plate) he had to go to the local vehicle registration office 25 miles away to get it taxed.
In a nutshell, is it possible for me to tax a car I purchase for resale by just using the green slip? (Even if the logbook is a few years old?) Will this allow me to sell the car taxed without registering it in my own name? I will get trade insurance which covers any vehicle.
I note that the green slip will not produce a registration document so even if the Post Office take the green slip from me am I right in thinking the car will not be registered in my name? Is it possible to get the tax disc without filling in my details on the green slip?
I’d imagine that if I keep the car for more than a few weeks I should register it in my own name but if I only have it for a few weeks (and of course it will be registered to me in the trade on the yellow part) it would be great if I can offer the car taxed, with the full log book and without an extra keeper. I see there are quite a few trade advertised cars online with 12 months tax and 1 owner so I’d imagine those guys have taxed the car without registering it in their own name (unless they are being economical with the truth about it being 2 owners!)
It’s not the end of the world if I have to register every car in my own name when I tax it (after all, I was used to doing this in the 90s and an extra owner isn’t going to be a massive issue if I’m selling cars that are at least 4 years old) but if I am able to get the tax disc without sending off the logbook until I sell the car that would be great.
Greatly appreciate any feedback/experience (and sorry for the long winded first message on here!)

I used one to tax my current car, I used the number on it to tax it online...

If it was me I'd get a set of trade plates again then when you buy something you can then send the yellow slip off so the dvla know that it is down to trade, I've just got myself some trade plates granted this is my full time job all I did to apply for them is to send a form to the dvla and a cheque for £165 (12mths tax on trade plate) and your sorted.
The only other thing I recommend is to keep the MID upto date with your trade insurance as I think if you have it longer than 14 days you have to put it on anyway so you might aswell put it on from the start.
Believe me get some trade plates as it makes life alot easier and keeping to right side of the law
Plus then when you tax it once it is sold it can go directly into the new keepers details either by saying to them you can tax on their behalf or include 12 mths tax in the price hence then you can advertise it with tax,

Many thanks for all the replies, they are much appreciated. In the short term, it's good news that I can tax cars without adding another owner.
I totally agree that trade plates make life far easier but I haven't had them since the 90s - in those days there was a fair bit of fuss to get them, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have even got them unless I had fairly prominent trade premises. I even remember reading somewhere in the 80s that a police officer might need to inspect your premises in order to get trade plates (I doubt that was ever true though!)
But it’s great to hear nowadays it’s just a case of applying for them. If things go well, I will definitely re-apply for them – I guess the fact I’ve had them before might help the process of getting them again too. I was assuming that I’d need to establish a record of buying and selling several cars for a while before applying for them but it’s good news that it’s just a form and £165! Many thanks again for your help.
It seems crucial to update the MID database as a friend once got stopped on the motorway within an hour of buying a car as the database had not yet updated! So I'll update that as soon as I buy any cars.

This has now changed and the green slip can't be used without an application to register (V62 IIRC) which adds an owner
If it's changed it's changed since Friday. I do rather a lot of these....hal3210 said:

You don't need to prove a number of sales to get trade plates as delivery drivers can get them.I totally agree that trade plates make life far easier but I haven't had them since the 90s - in those days there was a fair bit of fuss to get them, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have even got them unless I had fairly prominent trade premises. With some trade policies you can update the MID database yourself, otherwise you notify your insurance company and they update it. It can take 2 weeks for the database to be updated so there's no chance within hours!!
This has started to bug me as we have historically taxed vehicles on the green slip but over the past few months both our local Post Offices have refused to do this without completing the full V5 with our details or applying for a V5 at the same time. The Post Office counter staff told our admin girls this is now policy to stop traders taxing cars with no registered keeper.
Maybe we are just unlucky and the counter staff need more training which would save a lot of hassle for us in the future.
