What are people's views on what extra performance and extra milage I could expect in an RS6 C5?

Not convinced the effective pence per mile would be in the premiums benefit nor that I'd actually feel any benefit in raw power or added. "Go".

Best way is to try it - run the tank as dry as possible, fill up with premium, then run dry again.

Once you've run that second tank have a look at MPG to cost ratio and see if there's benefit. Generally I'd expect an advanced, highly charged engine to benefit, but as ever it's down to whether the ECU can cope.

What does the manual advise?

I know highly tuned BMW models such as the M3 are recommended to be run on Super Unleaded. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same for the Audi RS models.

Doesn't the label inside the fuel filler cap suggest 97ron? Suspect the manual says 95ron can be used as an exception if better not available, probably with a warning not to use full acceleration.

A 330 says minimum of 98 never mind an M3.

Will double check but either fuel is perfectly fine to use.

I might fill up with some Shells 99 grade fuel.

"Official performance figures for the Avant, whilst consuming the recommended high octane 98 RON "Super Plus" unleaded petrol indicate the 0-100 kilometres per hour (62.1 mph) dash would be completed in 4.6 seconds (s)"

Super plus and 10-15 MPG around town, ow, thought my 350Z was bad !

I doubt that is what RS6 user manual says. Does it?

I think there can be a benefit to using the premium fuels.
My car gets run on Tesco 99 or whatever its called, simply for convenience.
If I happen to put shell vpower (nitro+ now I think?) the difference is marked, its quite obvious.

Both of the above are better than the BP premium fuel, which seems to be a bit naff.

I've been known to be particularly sad and manually reset the ECU to learn what fuel I was running when I had my Soarer which even with very lights mods would detonate horrifically if ran on 95 octane fuel which I had to do more than occasionally on the count of being skint

I'm a seriously tight person, but I'd always use 'performance' fuel in 'performance' cars. Stuff like BP ultimate, Tesco Momentum, V Power, etc.

From memory the fuel filed cap does have 95/97 Ron or something like that indicating that either are perfectly safe to use.

Clearly I want the best fuel to use giving best performance - but not paying out simply for the name without any real benefits

After numerous mpg checks, much research and my own seat of the pants tests I can categorically state that higher octane offers noticeable performance gains, improved throttle response, smoother running and improved economy benefits over low octane fuel.

Always always always use the good stuff.

My 200SX is mapped on Shell V-power, accidentally stuck regular in it once and noticed a big difference.

I imagine something like an RS6 would definitely benefit from more rons.

Can't think of car (petrol) that cannot be run on 95, lots optimised on 98 but all ok to run on 95.

I run mine on 99 but it would be fine on 95 but wouldn't give its best.

So next question is - is there any notable preference in the premiums ?

Do you simply pay for the Shell or BP brand over momentum 99 at Tesco?

Of course it wil run on 95 if it has to. Suspect the manual says to use 97/98 and use of 95 for exceptions and full throttle should be avoided. Don't know for sure, but that's typical for Audi S/RS cars of that era.

The question about benefit of super unleaded is an aside question for me when not doing so is against the manufacturers recommendation.

I'm sure an actual C5 RS6 owner with a manual can clarify.

BP is 97 and it's rubbish as a premium fuel.

Lots of threads about vpower vs 99tesco so let's not start that again eh Welshy?

Manual days on page 215 it needs 98 Ron but you can use 95 Ron but it is best avoided.

So looks like premium then and Shell a power or Nitro+ it is then.
