I've had customers bring paint thickness gauges to help evaluate cars.

To a man they've not understood how to use them, nor gained anything useful from them.

I have an electronic one from my seedy car detailing days - it's helped me confirm the location of repairs on a couple of cars I've bought but it's been more of a man-toy than anything else.

looks like a thing I had decades ago, that was designed to spot filler. It worked Ok for that, but I suspect its difficult to use to measure paint thickness?

I have one and they work well, but I use it as part of my living. Most normal people just want to know if a car is full of filler or not, your eyes should be able to tell you that and if not a weak fridge magnet (the soft flexible vinyl ones are best as they can't ever scratch paint) is more than enough.

There are very few occasions most people need to tell (or could interpret the results) whether the paint on a car is all original by thickness. Even then everyone I know who does use one only uses it to confirm a repair not to spot one in the first place you can't beat an eye for that.
