I have a Mercedes CLS but I want something fun for running around in. It needs to have a reasonable boot, have a sensible MPG and have minimum of 4 seats.

I have £3k to spend.

My "potentials" list so far

Golf mk4 turbo
Audi s4
Audi s3
Seat cupra R
Honda civic type R
Ocvtavia VRS

Should I consider any of these or none of them, something else perhaps?

What's your idea of "sensible" MPG?

I will be using it daily so 25+ would be good, 30+ would be better. My CLS does 35-40 but I dont like taking it to work.

I was in the same position as yourself, as the other half is going to be driving the sensible car and I wanted something fun to commute in on my daily A road run.

I went for the Audi S3 and absolutely love it.

Fast and fun when wanted, incredibly comfy place to be with the leather Recaro Seats and surprisingly practical when needed as a trip back from B&Q with a stack of wood for boarding the loft has proven. Plus I'm hoping the Quattro plus the All Season tyres I've just ordered mean it'll keep us mobile if the weather turns bad.

MPG is sitting at 29.5mpg though this has no motorway driving just fast 'ish' A roads and town centre crawling. On the motorway it delivered mid 30's I think.

The CTR is the only one of those I would consider fun, but depends on the driving you are doing. If A road/Motorway one of the others might be better.

I've got around the same budget and I've been stuck for a while now. A lot of the S4's I look at are a bit ropey so I've gone off that idea. Been considering another Corrado VR6. (Qualifies for classic insurance which is a bonus) however I've also looked at a few Z3 2.8s and just missed out on a red one with hard top for peanuts.

So,

Z3 2.8?
Corrado VR6?

Some of those are not that much fun. For the budget you could get something with kart like handling, decent steering, exciting revvy engine: Integra DC2 or Celica T190 gets my vote.

Clio 172/182? Brother has the 172 cup and it quite easily gets mid 30's mpg wise and is tremendous fun smile

If you want fun, I would recommend the DC2 Integra Type R. Had mine for 7 years and it still puts a smile on my face.

Z3 no, if I was looking at 2 seats it would be an S2000 without hesitation the VR6 is an option, but in my budget they seep to be "modified" or a bit ropey.

I had a drive in one of these, utterly bored stiff until you plant it then all hell broke loose, no good for commuting, it was like driving my mums corolla up to 5k then it went nuts, but I dont drive to work at 5k rpm smile

Been there and done that, I have had 4, I do like them, but good ones not are sky high price wise and the well priced ones are .......well crap basically. The odd gem does pop up from time to time but they are going the way of the mk1 and mk2 golf, and mk1 XR2.

Plus they are a bit fragile for day to day use.

It is an option i suppose, but I would maybe go for a 309 gti if I could find a good one.

True. Some of my fastest cars have been rather dull. I find more thrill in the way an engine builds revs naturally, how sharp the steering is, wringing the most out of what you have, being able to throw a car into sharp corners with zero concern and total control. None of these things are measured by numbers on paper.

Your thread title says £3k to buy something fun. But you then list a mix of fairly normal family hatchbacks and saloons.

Not saying they can't be a blast or indeed even fast. But I'm quite certain none of them are they type of car I'd consider in the "fun" category.

Maybe you could clarify what you after more so?

On this note, the other things you've mentioned are:

-sensible mpg. Which later you then said 25mpg. But under what conditions and what sort of roads? Many cars can attain 25mpg on a run if driven like Miss Daisy. But that doesn't mean their Mode average will be this. Could you clarify what sort of use (driving style/types of roads) it'll be used for and if you are just wanting the highest mpg it can get, or if you mean the mpg you expect to get day in, day out?

-sensible boot. This is a bit vague, as sensible is dictated by it's intended use. So is there a limitation on size/volume, do you regularly carry something that needs to fit in the boot?

-4 seats. Same sort of thing here. An MGB GT technically has 4 seats and you could force 2 adults in the back. Which would be fine for once a month driving someone 2 miles. However if you often need to use 4 seats for longer distance, it completely wouldn't be.

I agree Jay, it was great engineering but only useful if you fancy screaming around the place. A bit odd. Nice seats and driving position, though...
