I recently bought a car, that i am sure was advertised with the dealer as having 1 previous owner, it now turns out from a HPI check that it has have 3 prior to me... which makes it likely that i over paid for the car

Is this legal?

Thanks Tom

Does it really matter that much?

Obviously all 3 owners looked after it otherwise you wouldn't have bought it? You've still got the same car. I don't know it might to you but for me I don't really mind providing it has the service history etc showing that everyone looked after it.

Also doesn't it state the number of previous owners on your reg document?

To be honest the number of previous owners (if over 4 or so years old) is largely irrelevant for value, especially on a performance car like an M3 that a lot of people would keep for only 1 season.

Yes it was mis-advertised but how would you prove any loss?

Any refund would be done against the good will of the dealer

Sell it. Probably clocked too. A ringer.

Really, if you like it enjoy, chalk it down to experience. I don't care about owners or service history. If it's in good condition for the year and runs well and you like it who cares. Lifes too short my friend.

I have to be honest, I wouldn't be happy. When you purchase a new car, especially something like an M£, things like launch control are a novelty but they wear off after a while. I would say that there is a good chance a 1 owner car has been 'launched' less than a 3-4 owner car? The process of the novelty wearing it off having been repeated for each owner and hence having more mechanical wear. I'd be taking this up with the dealership as regardless of wear, a 1 owner car is worth more than a 3 owner car.

The same thing happened to me quite a while back when buying a car. It said in the advert one owner from new and when I challenged the garage about the advert they said "we must have copied and pasted the advert from another similar car we were selling".

Basically BS, but I was happy with the car so left it at that.

I had a car that gained owners despite not changing owner either I or the DVLA screwed up a change of address and added an owner. Also why HPI a car you have purchased? That's like really enjoying the cheap sausage then going to the factory that makes them.

Taking the real extreme:

Owner 1 - pre-registered

owner 2 - buyer

owner 3 - screw up- change of reg or address

This.

Unless you have evidence to show you were misled, you don't have a leg to stand on.

yes

Always the responsibility of the buyer to confirm information given is genuine.

The DVLA record keepers of the vehicle not the owner, so if all the previous keepers had the car financed through the same company, then it could be a one owner car.

It makes such negligible difference to the value of the car that it's really not worth worrying about.

Just HPI the car or look at the V5C before purchase.
