Hello all,

I'm looking at either getting some winter tyres or snow socks for my girlfriend.
We live on a pretty steep hill and she's worried about not being able to get up it/down it safely if it snows.
I'd probably be only thinking about getting the fronts.
The car's a 65bhp diesel clio and neither of us drive it near the limits of grip, so winters having that "edge" isn't a massive advantage day-to day. We're not trying to shave a tenth off our lap time!

What option would you guys go for? I'm worried that if it snows hard then winter tyres won't cut it. But if they do the business it's going to save the faff of putting socks/chains on as required.

Option being post in the rather big winter tyre thread further on down the page.

I wouldn't go too OTT. Clio's handle well in the snow. Skinny tyres with good grip are the key.

Goodyear Ultragrip 8's from Event Tyres. Fitted at your door for a bargain price. Will last three years at least, summer and winter.

No disadvantages at all unless you're going sideways on a smooth roundabout when they squeal like a stuffed piglet. Ask me how I know this.

Oh - and read the big thread rather than starting another one on exactly the same subject... frown

Drop a secondhand piste basher from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

How much power do the brakes have? wink

I'd argue braking and steering are the primary focus for improvement for snowy road driving.
