I may have to start commuting to Manchester with my job and am mulling over doing it by car or by train.

Currently got an E90 330i and occasionally do a 15 mile round trip commute in it, maybe once or twice a week, getting the train the rest of the time.

Don't really fancy fueling the 330 on a 50 mile round trip 5 times a week down the M62 and would like to commit to either car or train.

I'd like to spend no more than £5k tops on something if it is purely to be slogged up and down the motorway every day. Needs to be economical (50mpg realistic) and a solid and safe place to be.

So far can only really see a monotonous focus giving any real options. Have considered leasing something, but that might be counter productive - the idea is to reduce outgoings on car/fuel.

Inspire me PH for this truly uninspiring what car thread!

Have you worked out the cost difference between a 50mpg car and 40mpg. If it's not a huge amount it gives you a lot more options.

Roughly, the savings would be ~£1000/yr. So ask yourself, is it worth spending £5k to save £1k/yr?
If you otherwise like your car then 50mile/day doesn't seem reason enough to change it.
But if you were planning on changing it anyway, then a diesel will save you some money.

Yeah inclined to go with train, but was keen to explore car options.

Probably false economy though when you factor in all the costs. Just go with the £11.80 daily return on the train, get some good apps/content on the ipad and keep the 330!

No-brainer for that money tbh.

That's settled then, keep the 330 on a diet of shell nitro + and get the train!
