Just had my MOT and been advised I have a nail in the tyre. I have run flat tyres, can they be repaired like normal tyres can?

Yes they can ( provided its in the tread area not the sidewall ) but many places wont touch them due to the hard work it is getting the tyre off the rim and refitting it after for not a lot of £££££'s whilst risking scratching or gouging the wheel itself.

Usually waving a few £20 notes makes the fitter change his mind though if the day is slow !!

ETA - above provided you have not driven on them whilst flat thus crucifying the sidewalls.

The main reason for not repairing a runflat is that if it's been driven very far or very fast at zero/low pressure the sidewall will have overheated and suffered damage.

PROVIDED you haven't driven on a deflated runflat it can be safely repaired in exactly the same way as any other tyre.

Cost me £15 to have one repaired. As long as the puncture is in the tread area it can be repaired.

I think it depends on manufacturer - one of the local tyre places has a poster on the wall that covers this question, there was a reply from each of the big manufacturers on if their tyres could be repaired. Answers varied from "no" to "depends" to "yes".. can't remember which is which though..

http://www.etyres.co.uk/news/puncture-repairs-to-r... says Michelin yes, Bridgestone no.

Places won't usually touch them as they don't know how long they've been run on for when flat. Running on them flat fks up the carcass, and if they're repaired there's a chance they'll fail.

As yours is still inflated the tyre garages won't have that worry.

Chains will tell you they will only replace it, one Sunday I tried Kwik fit, ats, national tyres.

My Indy tyre guy will repair providing it hasn't been run as a flat, and there's no damage in the sidewall etc.

Thanks all for the replies, gives me information to go in armed with. They are continental tyres and have not deflated so hopefully will be Ok. Halfords say they will repair if possible but local garage says no. Will get it sorted tomorrow before they have a chance of deflating.

I had to ring 2 or 3 places before one said they could on my Z4, but cost me a tenner and it was perfectly fine after. Think it entirely depends on the severity of the puncture and whether it's been driven on while deflated.

I tried getting a run flat repaired at our local ATS not long ago, earlier this year I think. It hadn't lost pressure, it just had a small screw stuck in the center of the tread. They said 'no way', they wouldn't even look at the tyre.

So despite what is said here and here it's still hard to find a company that does this. Why would they, when they can sell you a new tyre for £350 rolleyes.

I had to go to a few places before I went to ATS who were the only ones even prepared to look at the tyre. Apparently they can be repaired apart from pirelli and continentals. As I have continentals I need a new tyre. So annoying as it's probably only done 2000 miles at the most.

Whereabouts are you? I know a place near East Herts/West Essex/South Cambs that will do them, including Contis.

I'm in Hampshire, going to take it back to halfords as they seemed to think it could be repaired and if they say no will change the tyre for something other than a continental in case it happens again

Fairly easy to tell if the sidewall is fooked. One on my Z4 was driven on for about 12 miles and once off the rim, there was a little pile of black powder in the tyre. That's when you know you are forking out for a new tyre........or doing the sensible thing and swapping the RF's for regular tyres.

I've decided to get some of the sealant the AA uses, then if a get a puncture in one of my run-flats I can seal it so it never runs at zero pressure and so should be repairable.
