Ok, let's examine that statement on the back of the Tesco lorry...

1) Increasing the speed differential between vehicles inherently makes motorways less safe.
2) A Tesco truck doing 50mph on the motorway will mean HGVs overtaking more, which increases the risk of accidents, and causes additional congestion.
3) Does anyone actually believes that Tesco does this for safety reasons, rather than fuel economy reasons?

Maybe they are just reminding the majority of drivers, who are too clueless to realise that those are the maximum legal speeds for vehicles that size on single and dual carriageways. It's surprising how many people don't know that - they might foolishly think Tesco are being deliberately obstructive.

Except that the maximum on a motorway is 60mph for all HGVs,albeit most can only do 56.

The sign points out the maximum speed the lorry can legally do on those types of road with the exception of the Motorway where it can legally do 60mph but is limited by EU mandate to 56mph or 90 kph.

At 50mph other lorrys that are limited to 56mph can get past it quicker and therefore eliminate the "elephant racing" that most people complain about.

Look, it's a lorry, get over it.

Just think how much more expensive that bag of spuds would be if they added the extra fuel penalty for barreling on at 60mph. smile

Sorry, maybe I didn't make it very clear in my post - it's the reduction of motorway speed I'm questioning, not the single or dual carriageway limits which as you rightly say are the legal limits anyway.

Much of the haulage industry believe that all LGVs will be limited to 80 kph/ 50 mph very soon due to EU laws, so Tescos are just getting there a little early.

One 56 mph LGV driver overtaking a 50 mph LGV driver is a lot less problematic that the whole 55.9 mph vs 56 mph duel which we all dread getting caught behind.

To 50, instead of bouncing off the limiter at 56. . Yes you're right. Don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight now.

I would rather they were allowed to do 70mph and I got my potatoes a little quicker, allow cars to do 90 at the same time and job jobbed.

Get up earlier. Go to supermarket when it opens. Get potatoes earlier. Job jobbed.

Could do with the same ,both on the dash and on back doors of white vans ,reflecting the legal speeds.

Inside to remind driver
On the rear to remind other van drivers .

Can't argue with that! I was thinking the same on the M8 this morning.

Nope! You'll still get some doing 69.9 and others overtaking them at 70. So your best result will be being stuck behind them at 70 as opposed to 56.

Saying nothing about the fuel economy reason but what I will say is that a store near me was putting on average £50 a day into dot com vans after they fitted trackers that dropped to around £25!!
