Chris Harris video: racing a Fintail

Chris Harris races a Mercedes Fintail round the Nurburgring with David Coulthard

Back in June I did a race at the Nurburgring for old cars in a very old Mercedes. It was a 220 Fintail from the early 60s, and it was being run by the factory museum. There was another journalist in the car too, and a man called David Coulthard.

Coulthard: 'Nice suit, where'd you get it?'
Coulthard: 'Nice suit, where'd you get it?'
This was a three-hour race and with 120hp and a body the size of a small whale we were always going to be lacking some pace, but the Mercedes crew were the most affable bunch you could imagine. They just want to turn up, have some fun, get as many lovely old Mercs in the paddock as possible and then drink some beer. The race rather gets in the way of some of these activities!

Of course I accepted the invitation partly because it was a chance to meet David and pepper him with questions. The irritating thing about him is that however grounded, lucid and amusing he seems on television, he's even better in person.

So here's a video of a great weekend during which, as you might have suspected, not everything went to plan.

Enjoy.

It might have been safer with the seat facing backwards a la Captain Scarlet.

Seriously nice colour, that Merc. It somehow reminds me of an old Airfix Humbrol enamel I had a surfeit of when young.

Superb, enjoyed that. Coulthard seems a smashing bloke. Very good commentator too.

Great vid as usual, I've not really seen DC out of his professional bubble - was quite a different personality

Really enjoyable to watch. Coulthard seems a nice and amusing chap, and the pair of them got on well. A pity for them about the car, although luckily they didn't lose any places due to the failure.

looked like great fun!

Chris seems to be racing something different every weekend!!! Great life - Fair play to him.

I would like to see Chris have a go in a 1990s Super Tourer and see what he thinks.

Maybe someone could offer him a seat in one of the races in next years HSCC Super Touring Trophy.........

Excellent again, good on CH and DC was fun, had one of these for a few years, 1962 huge 220 SEb, fuel injected etc etc, RBR 444 where are you now??? It was built like a tiger tank, had rhd and column gear change but in oposite to uk positions. Horrible swing axle and central spring as rear suspension, rear axle failed on M5, it went to dodgy repair shop in London railway arches, they fitted a replacement. I always thought that some poor sod found his car next morning with no rear end mechanics.

CH videos are making a boring week much better these days.

Loved the vid, more oldtimer vids please!!

10 seconds after this video ends Harris and David are still watching and listening to the conversation the four girls on that table out of camera are having, and David thinks 'they have Scottish accents', so cunningly sends Harris up to go have a chat and pick his prize.

Harris approaches and asks, "Hello, are you four lassies from Scotland ?"

One of them angrily screeches at him, "It's Wales, Wales you bloody idiot!"

So Harris apologizes and replies, "I am so sorry. Are you four whales from Scotland ?"

And that's the last thing he remembers.

There probably isn't another F1 driver of his era who'd have entered into banter over who drove the car wink

Mansell would have had his lawyer talking to you smile
