I want to run electric power tools i.e. angle grinder / drill, etc from my car (LR Defender). I understand an inverter will convert 12v car power to 110v (or whatever) power tool power. Is it as simple as just plugging the inverter into the cigar lighter? I guess that will run the battery down so if the car engine is running will that provide enough juice to keep everything topped up?

I know nothing about car electrics.

Ta.

I should add it will be used only when I am getting my boat fixed up. So a shortish term project. A generator seems a bit extreme!

To run a grinder you will need about 1kw

A 1kw inverter is about £130

A 1kw generator is about £200

Or you could get an old 110v generator that bolts into your transfer box of the defender but they are fecking rare

Is a 1kw inverter ok to plug into a cigarette lighter, or would it require connecting direct to the battery?

Direct to the battery with fekkin' hefty leads - bigger than jump leads. It will flatten he battery in...erm..about 12 minutes.

But I've just finished a bottle of wine so my mathematics may be suspect... smile

Cant do the maths right now but a cig lighter usually runs off a 20 amp fuse, not enough for power tools.

That was my thinking, not had as much wine, yet, but doing other things....

Wattage must be pulled from the battery to the lighter socket, so 1,000watts @12v = 83amps (assuming the invertor is 100% efficent)

Ring the fire brigade before you turn it on, it'll save time smile

hehe

£200 for a generator looks increasingly like the right answer!
