HI

Would value your opinions on following

Took my 320D into tyre shop because it had a vibration that made the car feel like it had square wheels

Two tyre guys looked at the car in situ and remarked my front left was scrubbing and was going bald on the outside - they said i should have the front pair replaces (225/35/19's aren't cheap!) They took all four wheel off car and balanced, aligned and should have inspected all 4 wheels??!

£510 later (£440 tyres £70 full align) - drove off - still had vibration - booked into BMW - took out for test drive - put up on ramp - find back wheel (runflat) has serious bulge - obvious to anyone examining the wheel - bulge isnt just out of side wall - the tyre is egg shaped to the naked eye -

kind of furious that the tyre shop let me drive off with something that could have been very dangerous - and a little upset that the original TYRE problem wasnt diagnosed - the cost of the front left i can kind of agree with as was scrubbing - the front right still has 4-5mm of tread and to be honest i would have changed if i knew the rear was going to be a further £340!

What would you do... and or expect back from the tyre shop..?

thanks for any advice

you didn't spot it, they didn't spot it. BMW did.

Congratulate BMW. Presumably you needed the fronts anyway? Only if you did not would I be upset.

Why would you expect anything 'back' from them? They owe you nothing. Just don't go there again.

Sorry OP, I have nothing helpful to add.

But (225/35/19) on a BMW 320d? Wowsers! I wonder what Lambos/or Ferraris are running nowadays, 345/20/22 on the front? and 400/15/22 on the rear?

I'll get my coat!

I certainly wont go back - but i was kind of under the opinion i paid them for their expert opinion - they didn't fix the issue that i went there for and i think they sold me at least one Tyre i didn't necessarily need, least of all being negligent sending me back on the road with a potentially lethal Tyre that should have been obvious to anyone with a ramp and inspecting the tyres

obvious to everyone apart from you ?

You must accept some responsibility here. And at £500+ for two tires... they mist have seen you coming a mile away!

It sounds to me like they should've seen it. No idea what you can do about it though, tell them they missed a severely egged tyre and replaced one that didn't need replacing I suppose and see if they offer any kind of refund.

Well, not really. Just the typical cost of RFT tyres,

You should have gone back, as original fault was still there, before you had let BMW sort it out

Refund for what? He's only paid for the tyres and alignment that he needed anyway, nothing more. Also, how could he prove the bulge was there at the time of inspection?

Obvious to anyone that took the wheel OFF or was paid to inspect it on a ramp?? - try spotting a defect on the inside of a tyre yourself - especially when its not on the side wall but bulging on the tread

Would you always replace tyres as a pair? (when one has 5mm on) - if id known the rear was defective i think i may have held off both the fronts +

Also, how could he prove the bulge was there at the time of inspection? - because it had the same "oh dear my wheels are square or my drive shaft has gone feeling" that i drove in there with - and my next trip was to BWM 5 miles away
