Just a quickie - wondering if anyone can chip in with thoughts on a particular matter

I've been searching for my late father's Velocette Venom motorcycle for a long long time now - started searching in '98, but drew a blank at every corner. Tried pretty much every way to find it - I've pretty much given up now.

Anyhow

On DVLA it's listed as 'date of liability - 09/01/97' and says that if the vehicle has been licenced or SORN'd that the records will take sometime to change...

That's coming up to 17 years..

So - if it's not been SORN'd - I'm just wondering how this works. Does the owner keep getting reminders that he's just ignoring? I thought every registered vehicle has to either be taxed or SORN'd? I forgot to SORN one of mine last year and received two rather serious letters...

If it's been broken up - then why is it still on the system?

If you want to have a peek -

Velocette Venom GJP534

Would still love to find it...

Thanks.

It's possible that it's been broken up and the owner has never bothered to record the fact. However, given what it is I would say more likely it is in a private collection or undergoing a lengthy restoration.
The rules, as you say, are that every registered vehicle needs to be taxed or on a SORN, however this only applies to a vehicle that was taxed when SORN was first introduced in January 1998. Given that the Velocette was last taxed in 1997 it would not require a SORN. So, all is not lost smile
