I've been wondering over the last few days what's the safest car to "store" your money? Assuming budget isn't too much of an issue, what cars could you pick to enjoy for say 12 months that would be largely cost neutral, factoring in the usual running costs? Something that has bottomed out on the depreciation curve, or is even on the up, yet won't leave you facing huge potential bills, or excessive maintenance and running costs.

Assuming for these purposes that insurance isn't too much of an issue and you wouldn't put many miles on it, a few thousand per year max.

Caterham 7

Glacial depreciation, cheap insurance, servicing and running costs, and you get to put a big smile on your face as well ;-)

What amount of money are we talking here?

If we're talking a lot, then I'd go for an air-cooled 911. For under 10k I'd have an early Mk1 Elise, or an E46 M3 coupé with a manual gearbox. If we're talking lower down the scale then I'd go Jap and blag a nicely looked after DC2 Integra.

Under £1k? Get an MX5 in November and look after it well enough to sell in early summer.

^ That Caterham's a good shout. I'll throw in an Ariel Atom too, hardly seem to depreciate at all.

Interested in many price points but as long as there is a strong market for the car up to £100k, but of course at that level I would get quite twitchy about warranties etc

I have done exactly this and so far it seems to be paying off

I bought a pristine 911 carrera cab (1985), A TVR Chimaera with low mileage and an exceptionally low mileage Esprit Turbo (early stevens), easily doubled in value over last two years if not more including all the work I have done on them and factoring in the running costs - even including insurance and fuel. Hold out and buy right before xmas or in mid january, its when cars like this are really the cheapest they will be.

This or an M3 CSL seem to be a good choice currently.

Great advice. I'm hoping to get on this ride soon.
Did you buy private or dealer?
