I'm just negotiating to buy a 9 month old ex-management car from a Ford dealership.

They say they want £30 for VED.

Now I thought the first years VED was £0, so why does it need re-taxing yet ?

Its not SORNed according to DVLA.

Or does the free first year lapse if the car is sold ?

I will ask the question when I go back to the dealership later but wondered what the PH collective thoughts were.

Two questions.

1. Why do you think the first year is free?

2. If it is free VED are they actually asking you for an admin fee for sorting it out?

First year VED is same as each subsequent year for all cars, except it also includes a "showroom tax" which adds a chunk more if the car is high CO2.

You're only losing £8 or so by taxing 3 months earlier. Still, would be worth asking the question of what has happened to the original tax disc, since it's presumably not worth cashing it in due to it costing £0.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just binned.

We get manufacturer pre-reg cars with Nil RFL that don't come with tax discs.

Just pay for it, simples.
