I bought a car from a reputable main dealer last year.

Has no issues with the car whatsoever.

I've just come to sell and the new buyer says it's failed an hpi check on dodgy mileage.

Now I've seen the hpi check and the mileage is out of sync when the dealer acquired the car so it looks like some apprentice made a mess when registering the mileage.

Now the sale falls through because of this where do I stand with the dealer?

I'm thinking they need to buy the car back from me at the price I've agreed through a private sale.

Or is that unreasonable?

Cheers

No I didn't hpi the car as I didn't believe I needed to from a main dealer. Naive maybe.

Can you get hpi paperwork amended?

HPi bases their mileage checks on the information they receive via the MOT or by something putting the write numbers in when they run a check. A simple typo can create a mismatch and thus, flag an issue. Just contact HPi, they can verify if it's an error and wipe the slate clean.

Anyway, the mileage check isn't the be all and end all. Clocked cars can and will go unoticed if it's done right. Even checking service records and MoT history doesn't gaurantee anything either. Wouldn't be hard to knock 10 to 15k a year off before it gets serviced or MoT'd.

if the mistake can be verified I would hope so. Without a HPI check on buying the car I expect little come back for the dealer.

Have you got the hpi that the dealer did? Have you got proof that the hpi they did showed a mileage error?

Good stuff thanks.

Is this the place? Hpicheck.com? Or this place?
http://nmr.ie?

Do I dare ask, what happens they won't change it?

Where do stand with the dealer not informing me the hpi was iffy?

No I don't.

I have the invoice and the vehicle handover sheet with about 80 checks on. 2 of which are car data check and vehicle mileage verification received. I didnt get either. But I have signed this doc.

Pm me your reg number and I'll see what actually comes up.

I'll be surprised if it's anything more than an error on an MOT mileage. Happens a lot.

Just because HPI flags an error it doesn't mean whoever the dealer used did so I can't see why you have any recourse unless you can prove it is clocked.

"vehicle data or mileage check" doesn't mean HPI who are just one commercial company offering a service amongst many - they are not a statutory body.

I suspect someone has entered the wrong mileage when doing the check - the good old "National Mileage Register" as HPI call it (which is about as meaningful as the "National Accident Helpline") is wonderfully designed so as a dealer you can create an erroneous incorrect mileage on a car someone is trying to px and knock them down £2k on price. smile

Anyone else hpi ing the car can also cause this, if they enter the mileage incorrectly. Commonly, it is punters putting in 47 instead of 47000, after someone the day before puts in 47000. That flags as an error.
Some punters with buyers recourse do this to wiggle out of a deal.

There appear to be 3 37k entries around one of the services when a single 47k would have been fine.

I just hope the data can be put straight by hpi.

I don't think there's anything to worry about now.

Cheers guys, especially butter face
