Hi all, just after a few words of advice. Never owned a millage car, but thinking of getting one as there so much cheaper than the same car with half the millage.

Looking at a e46 with 145k ok the clock on a 2004 plate been a diesel. Car has full service history.

Is this too many miles? Should I stay away? Or is millage immaterial if it's been well looked after?

Thanks in advance

To be honest any modern Diesel engine on north of 140K will start showing signs of age. One thing to note on BMW's is that parts can be costly when things start failing/aging.

I've got an E46 320d with just 55k on the clock.

Word of warning...

Most boring car you will ever drive.

I've just been looking at 335i's but the fuel consumption figures and the £ to run it scare me.

So your advice would be to stay away? Going to be using it a daily driver 45 miles a day

I believe the points of failure on those engines are turbos and swirl flaps. Check to see if either has been done already.

We had one but it only had about 50k on it when we got rid of it. I thought it was competent enough and an ideal daily driver.

I wanted one for a year. I went to buy one, drove it and hated it. I bought a 330Ci the next day and I reckon the difference is running costs was minimal over the four thousand miles or so that I owned it for. However, they still have the perfect looks in M Sport form and I'm sure they're a good car for the motorway.

Competent but rather bland and not exciting to drive, though the handling is good. I wouldn't have another and would go for a 330i if I was to buy another Beemer. You can buy blanking plugs from specialists to replace the swirl flaps and prevent the dreaded ingestion and engine wrecking risk, and they're easy to fit. Turbos are expensive too; mine's on 80k so might last a bit longer without having to replace it, if I keep the car that long.

Go 330d if you can, pref a facelift.
150k no issue on those as long as swirl flaps are done and it's had a dmf and clutch

Clutch and dmf are £700 fitted
Turbo £600 fitted

I had mine from 30k, currently at 185k, had dmf, turbo, battery and shocks in that time

It's been remapped to earth and back and still goes like a stabbed rat
