Any recommendations for a hard-mounted (ie not suction type) holder which actually works?! So many are stupid sticky pads which never really hold after a few weeks, or the other type seem to be windscreen mounted. Im after something simple and effective.

+1 not the cheapest once you factor in both the car mount and phone holder but the best and shouldn't require any drilling.

Cheaper alternative is a CD Slot Mount which goes for around £10.

I bought one of these, clips to the air vents.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Bargain-Universal-Hold...

Padded arms go in and out some way so will hold many different phones, gap in base supports allow charging.

Main body can be unclipped and put in the glovebox leaving just the small bit with the vent clips

Ps. the couple of idiots who gave it a bad review don't know how to clip it on, the vent blade goes in between the arms which you open up.

Just noticed you said hard mounted, but then the above is very secure.

Brodit here too. You buy a holder for the phone (I have one designed for early iPhones with cases that's adjustable width and fits everything), then a bracket for the car.

http://www.dashmount.co.uk/ do some nice brackets as an alternative - particularly VAG stuff where mounting next to the radio (using one of the torx screws under the trim) is a neat option.

Sounds daft, and looks like it shouldn't work but I picked one of these up from Dunelm Mill after a colleague mentioned them to me... works a treat!

Can take a picture later of mine if you want

Another vote for Brodit.

Easily the best available and have specific mountings for different models of car. Quality piece of kit.

That said, you can do what I did with just the car mount...
