Ok, in an effort to fend of the derailing of the Debbie does Dallas thread I thought I would put the question out there. We have a poster over on that thread that has taken the following stance

A road is meant for everyone's usage. If you park your car on it then you are making it so nobody else can use that bit of road, which is selfish.

And yes, those people should move or sell their cars

In effect he is aying that if you only have a driveway that can accommodate one car and you have two you should A0 Move B) Sell your car. I imagine that the poor sods without a driveway may have a whole load of problems with this hehe

This has as you can imagine has sparked a small and spirited debate smile

I live in flats and most of us have to park on the street. Being on the 3rd floor it's difficult to have a drive installed wink

As long as you dont park so that you block the road. I dont see a problem with parking on the street.

That would leave you with option a and b then!

I think something to do if you've got a garage/drive that should be used.

Pretty much this, or in a way that severely effects traffic flow on a busy road.

All the houses where I live are of the terraced variety.

Shall we all sell our cars?

keep it quiet but some of my neighbours have two cars and manage to park on the road with no problems.

Like me you make sure you move to a street where everyone has ample off road parking. That way there is only a few on the road at anyone time. Same as people that complain that they can't park near their homes as they have no drive. Why did you buy it?

It works in Japan !

you're always going to get these feelings from some people, I'm one of them, I grew up in inner city brum with on street parking, and vowed I'd never suffer that.

Residents parking schemes get me going, if you can't think where you are going to park when you choose your home, then tough, either park where you can, legally, or don't own a car.

The picture that created the issue

The OP (of the other thread, not this one) has been parking in the turning head to the left of the 4wd. The owner to the right has asked very politely if he could refrain from parking their one particular night, and also alerting him to forthcoming building work where it would be more convenient for him to not be there.

OP lives up the street somewhere, has three cars, but only space for one on his drive.

Personally on a street like that I think it's rude to park far from your house. On a street full of terraced housing or in a student area where parking is clearly a free for all then go with the flow.

PS - OP has been judged and tried by the jury of PH as a Cock.

Yes, if your parking on the street it should be outside your house not down the road outside someone else's. Unless you can't get near like a city centre terrace.

Whilst I think people should try their best to park as close to their house as reasonably possible, I see no parking restrictions? There are laws about these things to stop the commoners squabbling.

Good idea yes
C) use a nearby carpark (that's probably empty all night)

The worst offenders are those who buy a house with a garage on a nice clear residential street. Convert the garage to a dining room. Claim a parking space in the road

If you park with the headlights on yes, you should be shot.
If you block the road, you should be shot.
If you double park, you should be shot.
If you park on the road in a sensible place, you shouldn't be shot.

My street looks far worse than that for cars parked along a narrow road and on a right angled bend so other traffic can't get through. Nearly everyday a lorry driver is knocking on doors or sitting with his hand on his horn because he can't get through. When challenged about their parking, people just say, "I pay my road tax and I'll park where I want." Just because parking isn't illegal it doesn't mean it's responsible. Being neighbourly and considerate doesn't come into it for some people round here.

To make matters worse, the council used to stop people going to football matches at the stadium down the road from parking on our estate. Now the police have taken over parking duties they don't. People have complained about the traffic and parking situation and the police say if someone's car is blocked in on their driveway they'll deal with it. If they come home to find their driveway blocked, they won't.

Too many people are too self centred to care about inconveniencing others and they don't seem to care about the possibility of their cars getting damaged by other people struggling round them either.

I think blocking the turning point on a road as in the above picture is rude because everyone (except smart owners) need to use it to get out with the minimum of fuss.

A masterful summary.

I'd add those who park on the road but have a drive.

Our estate was built in the 50's and wasn't designed for cars. But over the years people have added drives, garages, converted front lawns etc. I'd say every house now has spaces.

But it's still a slalom on the road, but half the drives are empty.

I really don't get it!

It's the motons who abandon their cars willy nilly, in a junction, on the pavement, on the grass, on a tight bend, on zig zags and yellow lines, etc, that should be shot.

If the speed limit is 40mph or greater you have to leave your lights on if it's dark. Many years ago when I went to the Christmas carol service at St Gabriel's Church on Brownhill Drive in Blackburn the police made a fortune every year booking people parking outside the church in the 40mph limit without leaving their lights on.

Since everything from contacting the Police to speaking directly to offenders has failed to decrease speeds a few like-minded residents have taken to on road parking and created a chicane system. It has done the trick.
