Sitting in front of ebay, (2nd)glass of wine in one hand, freely bidding away and half-hoping I don't win the car that I don't really need/want, it made me wonder how much people have paid for cars they have never even seen? (sheds mainly)

A new car, and probably nearly new cars don't really count, as they should be in good condition / well-prepped by dealers etc, but would you pay £500/£1000/£2000/more if you haven't seen the car and it could be a shed?

I guess if it's a real shed, and it blatantly isn't as described, you can still walk, but you're still then making the effort to go and pick it up / view (and then enter an argument around condition with the seller and end up walking).

My £1050 bid has been immediately outbid - not sure if I am happy/dissapointed.

I bid and won a 306 track car for £4000, I was like you at the time thinking oh no, I had to wait for the private plate to come off, 4 weeks later i handed over the cash and loved it, que a week later I got punted off the road and the insurance gave me my money back and I got what was left, not the kind of story I was hoping for but it's more or less still in one piece and the parts from it will sell for the original price quite easily.

Pre accident.

Are you Including auctions? I know you can see the car "in the flesh" but with no test drive, or owner interrogation... or am I barking at the wrong end of the kettle??

well I wire transferred $90,000 to a bloke in Texas I'd spoken to on the phone for about 20 minutes for a car I'd never seen, never even driven a like model of and this process also committed me to a further £20,000 of shipping and taxes. Didn't even get to see the car for a further 2 1/2 months when I was relieved that it actually did exist, but still another month before I could legally drive it in the UK, The day after it was legal it snowed (600bhp RWD no TC!) doh

Most i have paid unseen from ebay is £650, but then if the car isnt as described when you turn up you are well within your rights to back out assuming cash on collection.

I have paid £5k for a 12 year old car unseen, and also £22k unseen for and 18 month old car, but as it was from a dealer like you say that doesnt count.

I would say dont part any large amount of cash for a car unseen just in case it isnt how they described.

Just under £1500 back in '08 for my 205 GTI (off eBay)

Seller had only uploaded 2 very basic exterior shots & 1 interior shot and the car was really dirty in the pics due to recent bad weather. But his description was so well detailed, that I took the risk & offered to buy the car but on the premise that if it wasn't exactly as per his description, when I got to his after a 3 hour train journey, I would just get straight back on the train.

Got there, it was EXACTLY as he'd worded the advert so I drove home one happy 205 owner smile

I wasn't intending to include them, as you have seen it (you know it looks a shed!), but what the hell let's include auctions (you don't know it's shagged until you drive it etc)

£21,500 for the 335d - all good.
£21,250 for a LR Defender 110XS - fairly massive error.

In summer 2009, when there was more money and more stupidity about, I was at BCA Nottingham looking at buying an M3. This was shortly after online bidding came about but before the current system of grading cars was introduced.

There was a 3 year old carbon black M3 cab which was a finance repossession. I have never seen such an utter shed of a car. Every panel was dented, the wheels were mashed and half the dashboard and sat nav were missing, parts of which were slung in the boot. Needed about £10k and the rest spending on it and even then it would still be a dog.

Because of the cars dire condition, no one in the ring made a bid, but the car attracted internet bidding wars which drove the sale price to £35k, some £2k over book......sold as seen, or in this case as unseen.......

£80,000 for a new 911 GTS.

I called back ten minutes later, panicking, as I suddenly realized that they might have two, and I might have bought the wrong one.

Impossible to buy a "wrong" new 911 GTS.........

The last of the proper 911s for sure.......

Pathetic contribution to thread which isn't about buying new cars from main dealers.

£1270 for the Land Rover, on ebay with half an hour to go and only 4 150x150 pixel photos to see what the hell I was bidding for.

5 and a half years later I dont regret it at all!

No need to be a bell end. I found it an amusing anecdote.

Hardly pathetic.

Very relevant.

Its about how much you paid sight unseen.

And the PHer says it was £80k for a new 911GTS.....

Admittedly it was hardly going to be a shed, but it was a genuine moment of panic when I realized I'd only spoken about "the GTS", and not checked colour, number of driven wheels, roof type...
