I can't say I've seen much 'noise' about this in the news (or on car forums), but I can't be the only one who's been pleasantly surprised at the recent visible drop in fuel costs?

a little under 4 weeks ago my local BP in central London had standard u/l at 137.9p per litre, then this morning I looked out of my window to see them bringing the price down again (another penny off) to 127.9p per litre.

Taking all things into consideration, that's quite a drop.

Same in my area and about bloody time too.

There is massive over supply in North America leading to cheap fuel being imported to here, plus signifcant over capacity in the western European market for refining. The fuel has to be sold cheaper and finally the motorist is seeing the benefit biggrin

I've noticed this too.
It is great news for me as I don't have all that much money ATM but typical that I can't afford to feel the benefits and go on a fast drive though!

About to watch the prices round my way going straight up, with the added bonus of potential closures of petrol stations.

The joy of living in Scotland where Grangemouth provides all our fuel and a Union vs owner battle ensues with the owner threatening to close the refinery. Nice one.

Near me, at a couple of Shell Garages, they are selling normal unleaded for 129.9 and V-power for 148.9. 19p

19p difference, really??

I guess they have to sell all the V-power they bought at the higher price before they will reduce it?

Without wishing to take this thread into a political debate I'm afraid the Grangemouth issue is what happens when short sighted unions take on a billionaire owner of commodities business. The guy will not back down from his position as he knows that the plant is not worth as much as it used to be given the significant over capacity in the refining business in western europe and the abilty to bring in fuel cheaper from America currently being used by most retailers.

From a workers point of view I cannot see why an offer of at least 3 years work, albeit at lower rates of pay and benefits, is being turned down in the current economic climate. It's not as if there is much of an alternative local employment choice for most of the people being laid off or those with the fear hanging over them if the refinery is left in mothballs ?????

When I started driving in the late 1980s, just a penny increase in the price of a gallon would induce much gnashing of teeth amongst motorists. Now no-one seems to much care when prices creep up several p per litre. Any reduction is much welcomed in this household smile

This is one of those topics that I really struggle to take interest in.

Some guys in the office this morning were discussing where the cheapest local diesel is... which was dangerous as I hadn't had any coffee at this point and was already not far from falling asleep.

I doubt I'm the only one who just picks up the nozzle and pays? Although I did glance at how much more expensive Tesco Momentum was over ordinary 95 the other day. 5p more per litre, seemed a fair price to me so in it went.

Ultimately we'll all pay whatever the price as we have to. But it's worth having an idea of the cheapest local garage and going to that one when you have the chance.

The threat has been made real.

Ineos looking to close the plant now, talks failed.

I've 2 options - Tesco or Shell. I'll not use Tesco as I think it's crap so I don't even check how much it costs at Shell.

That will teach the unions for trying to be big and clever. About time someone called their bluff.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but the Grangemouth thing is a huge blow to Soapy Salmond's independence vision, and his lies and delusions that a 'yes' vote will hand him all the power to make Scotland a wonderful utopia.

Closure of the plant would undermine his credibility as a power player in these situations, and would also make an independent Scotland dependant on other nations to refine 'their' oil.

The loss of Grangemouth refinery would stand to make the SNP (almost) as unpopular as the Tories were in Scotland following the closure of Linwwood and Ravenscraig!

I see the hand of a much cleverer person that wee fat Alex behind this.....

So you enjoy paying the same and getting less?

I just go to the Shell which is on the side of the road as I drive home from work.

I have no idea why, or where this has come from, but I trust Shell more than other stations. Since finding out BP's Ultimate was only 97RON I canny trust 'em.

Of course I occasionally have to go to my local Tesco, but what I'm saying is I would never go out of my way to go to a petrol station because it might save me a pound. I like the Shell I go to and it has a Costa machine. As painful as fuel stations can get, that's a not bad one.

Hear here. For the benefit of our English readers here, Alex Salmond's views do not represent those of the majority of the people of Scotland!

At the extreme risk of taking this thread well off topic, I think we've just seen the first signs of what would happen to independant Scotland's industry under a Socialist SNP government.

I suppose it is relevant as we are talking about energy costs here.

Interesting comparison between Salmond's utter failure to negotiate with business (instead resorting to his usual bluff and bluster) and the deal brokered by the Westminster government to get the Hinckley Point nuclear station built.

Under the difficult circumstances the country is currently in I think it was a masterstroke. The price set for the generated power has come in for heavy criticism, but it has been set at just less than the current price being paid for wind and solar generated renewable energy (thus preventing the greenies complaining about it for fear of being seen as hypocrites). Inflation will almost certainly result in the energy being cheap well before the new plants reach their end-of-life, and also be a dis-incentive to overruns and delays in the project.
