Diagnostic needed
Discussion
PH I call on the collective knowledge to help diagnose what is potentially a massive failure.
Apologise for the spelling and grammar Im on my phone and a little concerned right now.
Car in question is a MK I Mazda 3 MPS.
Last service upon purchase in Jan with 31k on the clock
MOT pass last week with no issues and no advisories
Currently sitting with 38k miles
Changed from 2nd to 3rd under gently acceleration and it felt like the clutch slipped but I wasnt going hard enough for that then the check engine/engine management light came on.
The car was juddery as hell and the light went from soild to flashing and kept changing between the two. The oil temp was at tempteture and dropped pretty rapidly, i thought if it lost oil it would overheat.
Less than 1/2 a mile from home so get it here gently and as I pull up outside and put it in reverse plumes of thick black smoke bellow from the bonnet and in to the car through the vents so immediately stop and open the bonnet to cool off.
Not quite in my space I turn on the ignition enough to unlock the steering and push it in place and the brake peddle is jammed solid with very very little give in it.
Look underneath and its pissing what looks like oil out.
I checked the oil via the dipstick and armed only with the light on my phone it appears to be fine but will check again in the morning so gut instinct is gearbox oil.
In bed now and will ring my mechanic in the morning but any guesses to what it is? The turbo is tucked out of sight behind the block and thats where the smoke was coming from.
Does this sound like turbo, gearbox, cylinder head or something else?
Please tell me its not something major but i fear the worst.

Yeah sorry, it's when the conrod becomes detatched from the piston and ends up punching a hole in the side of the engine block. Would explain the the smoke, oil leaking and juddering.
Would I be right in saying this would write the engine off? A thrown rod would stop the engine - period. If there's enough oil I have never heard of such a thing in a modern engine, and that it happened when he put it into reverse? The smoke could have been a brake pad seized against the disc and the liquid brake fluid, and would explain the juddery drive and, since the fluid heated, the hard brake pedal. But why would the oil temperature suddenly drop? Scratching my head for a definitive answer, and look forward to hearing what actually went wrong. Hope it isn't too expensive.
The brake pedal being solid is probably just the servo which has exhausted its vacuum, nothing more.
The rest sounds like turbo seal failure; not the end of the world, just a slight haemorrhage from the bank account!
Snapped rods tend to stop the engine pretty damn quickly and violently. BTDT, got the T-shirt. The fact that it still runs, albeit badly, suggests something repairable.

Yeah, if it had dropped a rod you'd not be asking whether it was fixable, you would know it was dead. If it runs at all, I'd imagine the rotating assembly (crank, rods, pistons) is still inside the engine.
Don't know much about turbos myself, but I do know they're pretty warm, so if the oil that was previously flowing around lubricating the turbo is now spraying everywhere, that heat source would be effectively taken out of the equation, so possibly oil temperature would drop overall?
