Looking for a 4x4 that will comfortably tow a horsebox (plus horse!), be reliable and not ruinously expensive. Is this wishful thinking? Any PH'ers who have owned similar vehicles for similar jobs care to suggest anything, ideally 10-15k ish, any suggestions? Is a landcruiser a good idea?

land cruiser of Nissan patrol and you cannot go wrong, owned several Patrols (always towing up to 3 1/2 tonne) and never had a problem, couldn't stretch to a land cruiser but would if I could..........smile

What about a Kia Sorento? I seem to remember they won tow car of the year at one point in some caravanning magazine? 7 year warranties.
ETA: my jobs means speaking to many different people day in day out, I have spoken to a couple of owners of these cars and they have been very happy with them.

Land Rover Defender. Unbreakable, masses of torque and great residuals.
