So, with my last car, I knew exactly what I wanted and how I was going to get it. Researched thoroughly, inspected it bought it, had fun and sold it. Without the blinkers on & a wider search things are a bit tougher!

Now i'm a bit older dont really want to drive a car that does ~20mpg on a run but want something equally as fun'ish.. So it needs to be: fun, nippy, 4wd and potential for more power but retaining a semi sensible mpg (25-35), budget 8-12k.

I've been looking at the s3 with 265 brake, they'll make 300 easy with a remap, but i know it'll not be a proper 4wd experience unless i get a haldex controller and even then one couldn't guarantee it'd be fun to drive..

So then i've been looking at b7 a4 2.0t quattros - with mods they sound like could be interesting, especially with the torsen 4wd.. But then i'd look like every other Audi driver.. No offence to all those who own Audi's - theyve perhaps just got a bit too much stigma associated for me to drive one. Subaru impreza sti spec d - could do the trick but poor on fuel (25 ish mpg) and image crisis with those whom i work with..

Come on guy's you're the wealth of knowledge, fire some ideas and personal experiences at me, I need food for thought !

Mazda6 MPS? Subaru Legacy?

Those are two which I have been looking at recently, both 25-30mpg average if you are sensible and both awd with potential for more power if required.
