Currently own a 2005 W211 E55 AMG Mercedes. Amazing car but recent promotion means I need to commute a lot more and it isn't cost effective to keep it as daily drive. I am looking at option to keep her and get a diesel run-around but started to look at replacements. Basically I want the Merc but for it to do 30+ mpg instead of 20mpg.

Now I thought what I wanted wasn’t out there but looking further matching good mpg, comfort and pace isn’t that hard with a 16k budget. I would have to sacrifice performance obviously but there were options. My criteria is as follows:

16k budget
35+ mpg
Under 6s 0-60
5 door decent sized boot
Comfortable when cruising
Not too quiet, like a bit of a noise…

Found following but be interested as ever to any suggestions!

Audi A5 2010, 3.0 TDI V6 Quattro
Jaguar 2010 XF 3.0D S V6
Audi S3 Sportback
Golf GTi 2009+
BMW 335D M-Sport 2009
Golf R – 33mpg (pushing it for 16k)

LCI E60 535d with a decent map. I'm no fan of the E60 although an M Sport in the right colour with the right wheels isn't a bad looking car. Performance figures can be close to what you have mentioned.

Not to mention other running costs, servicing, fixing things, mots, road tax, insurance etc.

But most if not all of that £16k is coming from the sale of the E55, surely?

Is 0-60 in 6.8 hopelessly slow?

Having said that, at 231 bhp and 186g/km it seems noticeably worse than the later version, which isn't all that much more (265 bhp and 168g/km plus 0-60 in 6.2):

How many miles are you actually expecting to do? If you do 4 miles a day across town, then 15mpg vs 25mpg isnt going to have a big effect.

Yeah, really good replacement for an AMG saloon. Got all bases covered there, well done.

Hi all

Sorry may have confused some, the budget is from the sale of the E55 - I don't have a spare 16k....

Thanks Sparks, will look into the BMW a bit more, definitely an option I want to look at
Cymro - They are nice cars, hadn't thought of a Merc diesel option so will look into them as well

As for comments on criteria - I too didn't think 35mpg+ and under 6s 0-60 was possible but there are a few out there, the Jag I mention is one and a few of the BMWs too, also with remap options they go under 6s and get more mpg apparently.

Thanks all - keep suggestions coming
