Whilst I appreciate this isn't a public service forum, I am involved in preparation for severe weather over night tonight and in particular tomorrow morning.

It seems appropriate to suggest folks secure property (eg make space in a garage and put your car inside, if you have one available!) and be prepared for some pretty high winds, in particular tomorrow morning.

Looks likely that there will be interuption to power supply in places, and roads closed due to fallen trees etc.

What weather? I've heard nothing about this. The sort of things you're suggesting would normally be overhyped by the media by now, yet there's been nothing.

First page of BBC News:

And yes, it is looking like it's going to be very serious. Ignoring the media wouldn't be a good idea this time round. Stock up on your candles and blankets, power outtages in the south look likely.

I need to fly from Heathrow tomorrow at lunch time- guess that could be tricky? Do aircraft fly in hurricane winds?

We've got people driving up from London for meetings first thing in Chester - looks like it might be a waste of a day.

While the predictions are currently a bit better than they were (less likely to see 100mph winds, more around 60-80mph) I'd check ahead of travel personally. AFAIK the winds are around the speeds that airports start to shut down, but theres a few factors such as gusts or directions that could vary by the time your flight comes around.

I live in Rochester in Kent and the news is suggesting 80mph gusts and general chaos, yet the BBC weather shows the highest wind speed for my area as 25mph at 7am on Monday. Winds here right now are showing as 20mph, so I think we have a media hype on our hands here.

At the time of the 1987 storm, I was living in Winchester and slept right through it. Next day all the roads were blocked by fallen trees!

I'd be pretty confident that windspeed at 7am in Rochester will be more than 25mph.

I think that by 7am most of the damage will be done.

Worst of the winds will be overnight from about 1am onwards.

Surely that means if you were travelling 80- then actually you wouldn't move at all? (I know what you meant though smile)
