might be a daft question but having just got a new insurance policy, I've had a look through the docs and noticed under the section 'trailers', caravans aren't covered as part of the insurance.

does this mean that I can't drive a car towing a caravan as I'm not insured for it or does it just mean that if I tow a caravan, it isn't covered in the event of an accident, etc.?

n.b. I have no intention of affixing a towbar to the car and hauling anything, just curious.

Sounds like you can't caravan anymore. Best thing to do would be donate it to your local bonfire next week and get on Expedia.

Not a daft question, but one that can only be answered by your insurers. Preferably in writing.

I know when I told my insurer I'd fitted a towbar to tow a car trailer, I was told anything I'm towing would only be covered 3rd party.

It could be this, never heard of insurance stating you cannot tow anything?

Likely this - also why you get a separate caravan policy for a caravan...

Check with your insurers but generally means the caravan wouldn't be covered in the event of an accident. Your insurer also wouldn't pay to recover the caravan after an accident if it needs to be repatriated. Well worth getting separate caravan cover.

Well worth getting separate caravan cover so that you can burn the poxy thing and book a hotel with the insurance payout
Good advice.

If you insure a car against third-party risks, it is irrespective of whether you are towing anything (provided you have the relevant licence).

Comprehensive cover never automatically covers things being towed.

Thanks guys. Sounds about right. As I've said, not interested in towing anything but was curious (but not enough to bother Allianz with the question...)
