Polo
Would somebody be able to tell me watch exactly is the difference between the Ibiza and the polo.
At one stage i was told that they are pretty much the same but that the Ibiza would use an engine type the polo used a year or 2 perviously. I'm not sure if this is true.If somebody could provide me with some information I would appreciate it.

Having owned both... material quality is the biggest thing. I went VW to Seat and everything is plasticky in comparison. Seats are much better value for money though, have better equipment levels and are usually more powerful than their VW counterparts (especially the diesels).
Any notion that the VW is better built is b
ks, the truth is they're both pretty awful for build and reliability.

Thanks. I've just moved over from Ireland and currently have a 2006 Irish registered VW Polo, so looking to sell that in Ireland and get a car over here.Any notion that the VW is better built is b

Of the above 2 cars what would you think is the better option?
If anyone says a VW is better refined than a Seat is probably talking b
ks. That may of been the case in the past but an Ibiza is probably on par with a Polo in terms of interior build and goodies. If anything, the Seats look sportier imo.
In respect to your original questions, the polo is built in Germany while the Ibiza is build in Spain. They both use similar (if not the same) parts including the engine, although the engines on the VW are probably slightly more 'prestige' with the extra sensors, auxiliaries etc. hence different engine codes.

Thanks a lot. The seat above a few little things the polo does have ie outside temp reading and is also 650 less than the polo with 8000 miles less. Yes comparing the 2 cars above the seat does look a good bit sportier than the polo.

What is cost of seat parts like in the UK?
How do seats hold their value?
As a student car I just think the Fabia makes the most sense, it is the best value for money and does better in reliability/satisfaction surveys.
I think the Ibiza and Polo are made in the same Spanish plant, but may be wrong.
If you choose a Seat you're trading material quality for spec level, simple as that really. Some of the basic Polos really are basic though, the E had steel wheels, wind up windows and no air conditioning.
If you go for the Seat I'd be tempted by the 1.9 TDI - the petrol engines are gutless and the diesel will be easier to sell on (it's an old school diesel so there are no DPF concerns).

WRT your second paragraph; that's not entirely true, some engine codes are common across all the brands in the range. BAM for example was in late mk1 Audi TT's and S3s as well as my SEAT Leon Cupra R. VW never used that engine, the equivalent GTI at that time had a smaller turbo. The mk2 S3 and Leon Cupra R shared engine code CDL, the only real difference in the powertrain there was the S3 got a bigger intercooler as standard.

As already stated, there's no real truth in the claim that Audis and VWs are better made than SEATs or Skodas. They may have nicer interiors but that's pretty subjective anyway. To the OP, you could just as easily sell your current Polo and get a UK spec Polo that turned out to be a dog as if you'd replaced it with an Ibiza. Take your time, do the homework, drive a good number of potential cars, and above all, be picky - there are plenty of Polos and Ibizas out there, you can afford to hold out for a good one.

Yes i know I could get a polo that turns out to be a dog as you just never know with used cars.I ideally would like to get it sorted this week as im going back to ireland next week with my car as I'm going home for surgery. Ill be in ireland for 10 day and will sell my car when I'm there. so would like to have a car here to come back. I'm based near manchester so do not want to go out outside 20 miles when looking for a car. Bear in mind that the 1.9 TDI's PD have been phased out by the CR TDI engines around about 2010 I think(The CR engines are more refined and less chattery/more quite). You can now get 1.2 and 1.6 CR engines for the Polo which are cheaper to tax.
I don't think they do the petrol 1.4 FSI engine anymore either as these looked to be replaced by the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines which are more eco friendly and more fun to drive with the small turbo's that they come with. I would suggest getting a 1.2 tsi instead of the 1.6 CR as you still get good MPG and obviously petrol is 5p cheaper. Only get a diesel Polo/Ibiza if you are doing more than 13,000+ motorway driving otherwise its false economy.
The interior does feel nice as well on the new shape Ibiza compared to the polo.

OK this might be a daft question but could you not just take your current car back over to the UK?Northernchimp said:
A Skoda Fabia!
This!!! After getting a cappuccino coloured fabia as a higher car recently, I would consider it for the money to be in a class of its own, mine had the DSG gearbox it felt just like an average commuting car albeit very comfortable then pop it into sports mode and it went great and sounded superb on the down shift. I was that impressed I'm tempted to get one but not cappuccino brown!!

The insurance is the issue. i cant get insurance over here on an Irish Registration plate and my Irish insurance company will only insure me for a certain number of days. I from the Republic of Ireland so that is my problem with keeping the car here. phey708 said:

Both the Polo and Ibiza roll off the same line in Spain. All the bits you cant see are identical, the difference is in the styling and suspension tuning - the Ibiza tends to be 'firmer' as it is meant to be more sporting.Model for model, the Ibiza tends to have a higher spec for less money compared to the equivalent Polo which trades on the VW badge.
The other half has owned a Polo, Ibiza & 2 Fabias.
Whilst the build quality are so similar on the VW & Seat with many parts showing the VW/Seat/Audi logo, the specs varied - the Polo had wind up windows but electric mirrors, the Seat had electric windows & manual mirrors - there were little things all round the car like this but the quality was identical. Suppose this is a given seeings as they roll out of the same factory in Spain.
The Fabia was built quite a bit differently, whilst the switches, controls and components looked like VW parts, they weren't. Some were poor quality or previous generation, other parts were over engineered - usually where not required ie: thick laquered paint behind panel trims. The whole driving experience of the Skoda was rather stodgy compared to the others probably due to it's Eastern Europe intended market.
Think of where the cars are made and the quality of roads and this gives an idea as to how they work and how they are built.
Her current car is a Fabia 2 Sport TDI, great with the pre-DPF 1.9TDI unit but the seat materials, carpets and many parts such as filler caps etc are not VW, then again it was cheaper than a Polo and being a diesel in a Skoda should hold it's value OK.
Incidently the genuine VW rubber floor mats fitted the Polo, Ibiza and Fabia 1 perfectly, so yes, same floor pan.

So basically the cars are pretty much the same but for the price of the most basic model polo I would get a much higher spec ibiza. Most of the mechanical parts are the same its just the finish is different... Would that be right?Model for model, the Ibiza tends to have a higher spec for less money compared to the equivalent Polo which trades on the VW badge.
How do both car compare safety wise?
