Bit radical here but how about a.... 3 series? Get the SE version for added comfort.

Failing that its Volvo all the way.

A £15k C5 is very quickly a £5k C5, not where I would put my money.

He did say 'no more than £15k'... Also residuals don't matter if you're keeping it 7+ years...

Residuals matter to everyone with £15k to spend, and, if they don't, they really ought to.

Quite possibly one of the least reliable combinations of engine and gearbox you could buy!

Needless paranoia about residuals is the reason the roads are swimming with boring cars. It depends on the individual's circumstances but even the 3-series is only going to be worth £2-3k at 10 years old so what does it matter?

So after 10 yrs the 3-series is worth £2-3k and the c5 is worth, err, nothing!

Smaller than a 3 series?

not compatible I'm afraid.

Luxury demands a long wheelbase

Not necessarily. But in the current climate, yes.

lpg converted TVR Chimaera - no depreciation there, maybe a 996 Porsche with replacement engine.

The C5 is maybe worth a grand... But then the equivalent spec 3-series would've cost £1-2k more to begin with.
