I'm going to organise a day at a skid pan for our team, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of any in the midlands, and or if they've done one, even if it's eleswhere and things to look out for?

Though this is inevitably in part a team bonding day there is also a serious side to it, as a team we do a lot of miles and safety is key in our industry.

Any suggestions, tips etc would be appreciated.

Cheers

Great idea for people who drive lots for work - a mate did one via the IAM somewhere in the midlands (helpful I know) and said it was a great experience and taught him a lot! smile

Thanks for the response, I spoke to one regional guy for the IAM and he said they don't do it anymore, though it may have been a different area to your mate, if you do manage to think where it was please let me know - appreciated.

I did one at Castle Combe - although it was quite some time ago now I come to think of it.

I think Millbrook do the trolley car days (i.e. one of those car's with castors on to reduce grip and change the balance of the car)

I've done this one too. It's not bad but the liquid they use to grease the surface makes it so slippery it's unrealistic. I've also done the "introduction to drifting" at Oulton Park. It lacks the classroom part but is a lot more fun and still a great learning experience.

Depends what you call the midlands, but I think Porsche allow people to use their PDC Silverstone skid pan. Also been to one at Rockingham from memory.

On a somewhat O/T note, quite a few driver training places have them. Does anyone know if the one in Harlow does? I'd definitely sign up for one in the local area.

HQ is Solihull way so anywhere within reasonable distance is fine, I've found one in Essex but that would seem a little shall we say 'convenient'!

Not sure re Harlow, perhaps contact the local IAM guys there, accessible on their website I think.

Any other suggestions guys, Castle Combe etc seems a little far.

I've hired the wet grip facility at Rockingham (via Bookatrack) before now. It's not a skid pan as such; there's two driving areas - a straight area with a kick plate on it and a half circle where you can drive with either all or part of the car on the slippery stuff. Very educational and a lot of fun (particularly in a Caterham). We had a great time with quite an eclectic mix of cars from the aforementioned Caterham to a P38 Range Rover.

Thanks for all the responses fellas - seems a lot of places aren't open in the winter or are exhorbitant cost wise (see Porsche experience centre, though I'm not surprised), plus can't really find any in the midlands.

Any other suggestions much appreciated.

If you do find anywhere in the midlands I'd be interested to know.

Pro drive track, just outside Kenilworth.

They have a round pan, and a slippery road.
It's a length of road that been tiled with slippy tiles, great for handling practice.

They also have a track and 4x4 course to play on.

Thanks for that, sorry but where's Kenilworth near - streetmap brings up a variety of possibilities?

It is just south of Coventry, the ideal location for me, but how do you get to use it? Does someone run skid pan days there?

I've done the trolley car skid pan thing at Donington Park and I thought it was pretty good (I've done nothing else like it though so I've got nothing to compare it to!).

Donington Park can't be more than an hour or so from Solihull can it?
