Whilst I'm not condoning this fella's actions, I can't help but feel that a tiny, tiny peice of me is impressed...

Normal disclaimer applies to a Jalopnik link

Nutcase, the definition of "making progress" or both. What do you lot think?

That's a hugely impressive time, regardless of anyones opinion on what he's done.

Very impressive indeed. Absolutely blown away the old record. Did they remember to change time zones!? hehe

I'm impressed and jealous. Averaging a lepton is pretty quick when you do it on the autobahn for a couple of hours. To do it all the way across the US is damned good going.

Well done that man.

What a great story! I love the thought of someone going to the trouble of building a car such as that - a bit like the chap who broke the Land's End to John O'Groats record. Epic

Damned fine effort _ if I condoned that sort of thing.

That is quick. I averaged 90+mph door-to-door across the UK an unspecified time ago and when you factor in fuel stops and other inevitables you're spending a lot of time north of 120mph. An AMG Merc would seem to be a good choice, if a little heavy on fuel.

Hugely impressive. My through the night drive from Port Grimaud to Calais ferry terminal (750miles) at just under 11 hours I thought was going some. Apparently someone else reckons they have done the same trip in 9.5 hours but probably not in a diesel truck like mine...

Is there some sort of UK equivalent for this? Or would it just be impossible, what with the myriad of speed traps and speed cameras.

Depends how illegal you're willing to go, running without plates will defeat a large portion of speed cameras. Remove tax disc and any other identifying marks from display and mask up to avoid front facing cameras would be taking it to the extreme but might work? But any mobile stuff accompanied by Police cars/bikes are still a problem.

In the (distant) past, I did RR Filton to Liverpool Airport (170 miles) in 1h45m.
Wouldn't normally have been able to do that time/speed due to traffic, but it I'd just finished a 'one day' piece of work for RR that started at 4am on the Tuesday and finished at 3am on the Wednesday!

Also did Liverpool Airport to Chessington (not the theme park) in 2h30m after having to wait an hour for a colleague who was riding shotgun to get out of bed (had to be there by 9am, and we made it with 30m to spare)!

Don't drive like that any more though, as it's too risky and my commute would be a costly PITA without a DL, and I'm able to be flexible with arrival times in my current role.

Thats pissed on Alex Roys chips, somewhat. To achieve a better time youd hope that they did more preparation work than Alex - maybe had a satellite especially set in orbit or something...

Edit: not in the same league, but I may have once managed to get from Stansted Airport to Woking in 61 minutes - that's a journey of 78 miles. Was helped hugely by being the tail gunner behind 2 very fast cars for the M11 part of the journey, plus it was fairly late at night so the motorways were relatively empty but a large section of the M25 had road works with average speed cameras.

It would be interesting to find out how much fuel capacity and therefore range without needing to stop for fuel contributed to the time v the XJS's time which probably would have carried less fuel and therefore depended more on running speed to compensate for the fuel stops.

I once did Maidstone to Heathrow in 30 minutes. M25 not long completed. No speed cameras. Slightly different attitude to speeding back them. Did it in a W124 E280 with it hitting the rev limiter a few times.
