25k on two cars...
Discussion
As per the title! Budget is 25k and for that I want two cars.
Initial plan was a Cayenne and a 996C2/4, the cayenne is still likely, but as much as my 911 itch needs scratching, the fear of a 6k+ rebuild timebomb scares me.
So, any thoughts?
One needs to be a large premium family orientated 4x4. We currently have an A6 avant and the wife wants to do the 4x4 thing, hence the Cayenne.
I want something that can be used daily, but still has a sense of occasion and is more sports car than GT car. I had a 650i before and that ticked most boxes, it just wasn't the type of car to really push on in.
Ive always liked e46 m3s, but I think it might get a bit boring too quickly. Maybe a CS would be better?

What is the cost of the Cayenne?
Not familiar with the costs of those, so unsure of the budget left on the other car.
I would be trying to squeeze an SL55 AMG into the equation! I have no shame in hiding my fondness of these cars - quite easily the most monstrous power delivery in any car I have driven!
Not sure how much that would leave for the 4x4 though.

How about an early MERC ML with or without an LPG conversion (although it doesn't sound like you'er averse to buying petrol) leaving you 20k+ to spend on pork.
OR if you're feeling a little fairer, 10k gets you in a cayenne, with 15k to spend on a Z4M (Roadster or Coupe, your choice), as you already have a Porsche. A big Porsche, but a Porsche.

Why do you need a 4x4, there are literally hardly any places its truly needed, We live in the outback. we have a Honda CRV, it does the job pretty well, we often go to national parks and remote places. Prior to that an old XJ Jeep Cherokee, that died on the way to Bynoe harbour, the CRV did same trip easily.
I have a classic 911 (3.2 aircooled), its great to drive and comfortable. I drove a 911 turbo a few months back (996) and was completely underwhelmed. Only good when you can open the taps which you wont do most of the time, aside from that I could have been driving a focus. I much prefered my 911. Having said that my 911 comes third behind my Esprit Turbo and way out in front is my TVR Chimaera. I know its not built as well but its prettier, quicker and more comfortable plus sounds a different league. It also costs a fraction of the upkeep - 911 is circa $3k a year, Esprit a little more probably
$6k over the last year (needed new fuel tanks and big service), TVR's cost me an average of 150-450 gbp a year (depending if tyres were needed- four TVR's spanning 10 years)
so personally I think it makes sense getting a cheap to run 'baby' 4x4 such as a rav or a crv as in reality (not trying to impress the joneses) thats all you would ever need and spending the rest on something thats really going to feel different and you will enjoy.

Did you miss this bit in the initial post?
Ha! I think he did. I know many on here will sneer at wanting one, but that's our choice and I don't want to debate it. Also, the 200sx is not really my idea of premium, no issue with the car being good, it just doesn't fit these criteria. The SL55 is a good idea, always liked those.
For extra info, Cayennes can be had for low teens, so it's probably going to be close to a 50/50 split of the budget. If I needed to find a couple of K more I probably could if the cars justified it.

Does the sportier car need to be a 4 seater? If not what about a Boxster (S)?
If possible, yes. As it would mean it could still be used if we all go out (2 adults, 2 kids.) Not essential though. Boxster S is a nice option, and means more funds for the other car, or less spent over all. I still need to understand the chances of engine issues though.
As has been posted,
Cayenne for 15k ish
and 10k on a good TVR Chimaera 450 / 500, they go like stink, both that I have owned have been extremely reliable, it's a Rover V8 so proven engine, the noise is just sublime, more so if you remove the precats and sleeve the exhaust.
Then you have a proper 4x4 for day to day stuff and a fun convertible for weekend hooning.
If you need 4 seats E46 M3 Convertible / Coupe
