A colleague just asked me for some advice on a car insurance issue and I'm a bit stumped.

His wife and him are both on working visas in the UK and their car insurance is very expensive as a result. He moved house a couple of weeks ago and is trying to change the addresses on their policies. His has been fine. His wife's insurance company however are saying that their underwriters will not cover the new address and that her policy will therefore be cancelled.

Because their insurance is so expensive, NCB is crucial to them and the policy only has about 25 days left to run until she can get a full two years NCB so obviously they're very keen not to cancel the policy.

Anybody have any bright ideas as to how they can resolve this one?

Personally I would let the policy run to the end and collect the NCB as the chances of something happening to the car at the new address are slim imo.

Go back to the old house for 25 days, or cancel the policy.

they are the only 2 options, without decieving the insurance company.

If the address is that bad that they won't even cover it (let alone increase the price), they are pretty screwed when they come to renewal anyway!

Don't you get the NCB after 10 months?
Hence the 10 month accelerator policies that (someone) provides

Slightly different scenario as the car is not being sold (the bike wasnt stolen in that link), just being kept at a different location overnight - assuming she drives to work/wherever during the day and parks it there.

Like I say, its what I would do in this situation and if something happens that comes back to bite me then so be it.

This was the only option that came to mind but as I see it the big risk is not them having the car stolen from the new address but that the insurer may not pay out in the event of a serious claim (injuries to third party etc) because the address would be incorrect. Is that likely?

Oddly enough, I know the area he lives and it's okay, certainly not obviously an insurance risk and only a few streets away from where he was living before.

Thanks for the advice folks.

Get your friend to ring the insurers and ask if they will honour the one year's NCD and get them to confirm it in the cancellation letter.

If it's only a few streets away I'd keep it there, have her walk/ferried by the other half until the policy expires.

If anyone is insured to ride / drive, why does plod lie on the tv and say you are driving without insurance on a car covered by mum and dad?
