Hyundai's SEMA cars: Time For Tea?

Slammed and boosted but when was the last time you saw a 1,000hp Hyundai?

Veloster Turbo aside there probably isn't much in the Hyundai range here to tickle the PH fancy. More's the pity we don't get the Genesis coupe then, this sharp-looking, rear-driven two-door available stock with either a 274hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four or a 348hp 3.8-litre V6.

Respectively the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ and Nissan 370Z face a genuine rival from the Koreans then, the Genesis a popular foundation for the tuners of the SEMA show given those promising fundamentals.

This little vid offers three different visions of the Genesis for the show, including a 1,000hp monster that's nonetheless tuned to be driveable and usable day to day. We'll have to see about that. The lurid yellow Veloster time attack car (and an exhausted sounding chap who's just finished building it) bring the line-up to a close, the SEMA show demonstrating the modding scene Stateside is a healthy and diverse one.

See here!

Loved my Hyundai Coupe. But with only 165bhp from the 2.7V6 - just always felt like it should have had more. Was brisk enough and great sounding engine, but would have loved it to be near the 200bhp+.
Glad to see Hyundais with more power. Shame the company themselves not introducing the power from the start.

The lead picture appears to be a photoshop fantasy.. I can't help thinking most 16yr olds could do better with paint?

I think the Genesis R-Spec with the 429bhp 5.0L V8 you can actually buy for half the price of an M5 is more interesting....

I've test driven the 3.8 litre Genesis Coupe. It's an awesome vehicle, and excellent value for around £20,000 in the US. However, it just wasn't as much fun as the GT86 (FR-S). It's a stonking grand tourer that compares with machinery twice the price as far as driving is concerned. However, it does have some depressingly low rent details such as the faux bonnet nostrils etc and over complicated dashboard.

It's mind-boggling that Hyundai don't sell the Genesis in the UK! It's a nice, RWD, powerful coupe. Unfortunately, the facelifted front is extremely fussy, design-wise.

As far as that Veloster is concerned, I'll quote American Graffiti:

Say, I like the color of your car there, man. What's that s'posed to be? Sort of a cross between piss yella' and puke green ain't it?

But yours was the old one (Tiburon in the US), right?

That one was front-wheel-drive. The Genesis is RWD and a completely different car.

BTW, the V6 Genesis coupe has 348 bhp, stock. How much more power do you expect them to offer from a naturally aspirated V6 without running into reliability issues?

Remember, Hyundai need their cars to be reliable, considering their 10 year warranty!

Me to.

I really would like to attend SEMA but as I understand it only people in the automotive industry get an invite.

Plus I'd also like to see the Genesis coupe on sale in Europe, for the sort of money it is sold in the US for it makes the Toyo'buru look rubbish.

The Genesis coupe would suffer from 370z-itis...CO2 tax would kill it. A genesis 2.0D coupe would be the only way to sell in the EU, sadly.

Good news but I prefer the old model.

As another posted commented on the 370Zitus, i did a quick comparison and the Hyundai matches the 370z very very well, even on C02 (the measure we are all interested in -not)
