I was lucky enough to recently pick up a 2005 Gallardo. Loving the car to bits and its a 2 owner car in excellent condition in Lime Green. Looks and drives mint.

When work colleagues, family and friends see it why is the first question ever asked "how old is it"!?

So irritating. Im not going to lie and say its a 2010 but I feel its a rude question to ask and would prefer to dodge it as I don't feel obliged to answer.

How would you dodge this question!?

Distract them by informing them of its mpg; While they're still reeling from the shock of that jump in the car and speed away in a wonderful cloud of V10 noise.

Who gives a fk how old it is, or what economy it gives.

The sort of people that need to ask the age of the car, you shouldnt be bothered about impressing.

I'd be happy with my 2005 Gallardo.

Have you private plated it to disguise the age? If so, of course they're going to ask, they can't tell from the plate. You can try politely telling them you'd rather not say, but then you're the one who comes across as weirdly ashamed of their lovely car because it's a bit old.

"What year is it?"

"It's an '05."

"Cool."

Not exactly a killer of a conversation is it?

If one of my friends bought a car with a long production cycle and private plated it, I'd probably ask the age. Not out of rudeness or any sense of shaming them, just out of interest.

I would say this too; assumes of course that it does not have an age related plate on it and those asking don't know their '55' from their Britvic.

Reply "I don't know, how would I find that out?"

or "I don't know, I only got it a few weeks ago".

'You'd never believe its 8 years old - just look how good it is!'

Accentuate the positive.

Unfortunately it's a self brought on problem. You put a private plate on to disguise the age and then people are curious about the age, be it through trying to figure out how much it cost or just curious about the model. I know I would as the Gallardo to LP-560 was a big jump.

It is an 8 year old car so what's wrong with just telling them?

Say "21 *pause* Oh, sorry thought you were asking about my new girlfriend". Everyone high fives. Then tyre smoke, noise etc. as above.

I get asked this occasionally, normally the question's followed up with "what size engine is it?" - which further leads to comments about drinking fuel etc.
