I've had my 2011 Polo GTI for a year now and orginally bought it as I only used it every other day for a few miles but my I am now doing 40 miles a day to work.
I'm happy with it in every single way- it hasn't put a foot wrong and is fairly economical considering it's a hot hatch.
I'd say realistically I'm averaging early 40s on my motorway commute which is great, but somehow the fuel guauge is moving a little too quick for my liking.

Now I realise the cost of changing motors might negate any savings- but would they really?
Plus I'm used to a bit of poke- and if I did make the swap for a diesel I'd have to go for a 6 pot, which again, unless you're spending a fair amount on a new 3 series or something- will I save anything in the long run?

Suggestions/advice appreciated!

Have roughly the same commute and went for a Golf GTI over the diesel model. Haven't looked back, fair enough I'd get a bit extra out of the diesel mpg wise but not enough to make a huge difference.

I bought my diesel when my commute was a 100 mile a day round trip.

For your journey I'd stick with the Polo.

I'd stick with the car you like.

If you want to see how much it would cost plug the numbers into Excel, I bet the price difference between petrol/diesel will be negligible...

Is that 40 miles in total or 40 miles each way? I live 40 miles from work [thus 80 miles a day in total] and drive an E36 328...I can get about 33mpg but still wouldn't really consider a diesel, unless it was saving me £100+ a month...which it wouldn't as I'd have the cost of buying the car in the first place [I own my BM]. That doesn't really help does it?!? Keep the Polo smile

If you're averaging early 40's in the Polo I only get high 40's in my 2.0L TDI golf over a distance similar to yours.

Bear in mind the fuel is more expensive too and you really don't save much (if anything) plus you have the hassle of changing car.

Low 40s is pretty good for a sporty car really, I don't think the extra 10mpg you might get with a diesel would be worth the hassle in new car costs, extra fuel costs, and the potential extra things to go wrong on a modern diesel.

Keep the Polo. I do a 50 mile round trip and I'm binning off the deisel in favour of a Civic Type R!

I wouldn't get a diesel for your mileage. I needed a car for a 100 mile a day commute and even with that mileage I didn't consider a diesel.

Is 20 miles each way really much of a commute? And if it's on motorway, then you'll not get much more economical roads to drive on.

Personally if I was only doing 40 miles a day I'd be using my 5.7 V8 Camaro!

if you take it steady it will do 45mpg(brim2brim) 400 miles to a tank they can be remarkably good on fuel
