Hi guys

Coming home with the wife today, after pick little eltax up from nursery. We were stationary at some t/lights and about to move off as the lights went green. Unfortunately the girl behind us in the mini set off and then slipped off the pedals and how he back of the wife's QQ. Under 10 miles an hour I imagine enough to crack the bumper and upset the parking sensors.

It also shoved us lightly into the car in front. Who weirdly must have felt it as they drove off!!

Anyway, as the car seat has been in a bump, what's the story? Should I be replacing it? Can is inspected? Or is there an impact ferocity threshold before the insurance will pay out?

We have a spare so not in a rush but would be nice to know where we stand.

IMO just tell your insurance about the car seat and chances are they will replace it, this is what happened to a friend.

Hey mate, sorry this has happened, always a pain but no-one hurt etc.

My understanding is that anything above a 5mph impact needs replacing. My sister is VERY cautious with this type of thing and last year was involved to 2 accidents within the space of about 3 weeks which meant she had to buy new seats and then claim from the TP insurers.

Hopefully your TP insurer will sort very quickly with no fuss.

I would guess it would be OK for use but if it were me I would replace it purely because I would be forever worrying that it was in some way weakened.

Anyway, Eltax? That's the first time I have ever heard of that name. Does it have a special meaning or similar? smile

Lol. Believe it or not it was the brand of a speaker sat under my desk at uni when I signed up for my first forum!

If it's a seat made by Kiddy you can send them the seat and a copy of the police accident report and they will replace it free of charge.

Had this recently. Insurance company replaced the seats under the personal possessions cover, so knocked money off for the age.

Try Recaro to see if the offer a service to check your seat to ensure all is well.

Britax do this service....it's either free or a nominal charge and would give you peace of mind

Keep the seat. Don't claim on the insurance.

Anyway, in a rear impact the seat would mostly be in compression , rather than tension, so the likelihood of damage even less.

Absolutely this. Unless this childseat was made of something like paper....

I'd imagine they get bigger impacts being bashed about in general daily use!

Are you also considering replacing the seat belts? If not, don't replace the child seat.

I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering if the seat was mounted on the towbar, to sustain enough damage to be replaced after that impact...

Sorry chaps. Forgive me for being so stupid as to ask a question about the safety of my 16 month old baby! I sell firewalls for living, I don't manufacturer complex car seats. For all I know the best case design is to make them protect for one single impact and they won't perform as well in another one! That's why I fking asked.

The sanctimony of this place starts to make me wonder if I should bother posting in future.

As it happens, the insurance company have said if we want to we can claim the first £100 back as they have a 'take no chances' approach to car seats. They advised us to check with the manufacturer on their advice too.
