what is it that attracts f1 teams to base themselves in Britain , i think its great that we have mercedes , mclaren , lotus , marrusia , lotus , williams , even force india and catherham , its something that isnt talked about much but i have to wonder what we can offer that appeals to them? As i said i think its great ,red bull run a championship parade in milton keynes a few years ago and it was brilliant.

F1 has its roots in the UK. The sports pioneers(Chapman, Stewart, Moss, Murray to name very few)are from here. I am a very strong believer that this country harvests the best engineers, whether it be 50 years ago or today. We have always found a way to win through. Then it usually gets banned as its so good.

It's become self perpetuating over the years. Most new F1 teams are just rebranded old teams. And even with the real new teams it makes sense to be UK base as the staff they'll try to recruit will be UK based.

Wars meant planes.

Planes were built by engineers.

Engineers based themselves near airfields.

Airfields started getting used for motorsport.

Engineers started building racing cars.

Yet my housemate is a Caterham engineer..... and is Spanish. Did train at a UK uni though.

Parts supply, knowledge, circuits and because it's the done thing.

looking around business parks in brackley and banbury, it isn't surprising that F1 is based near the specialists, same as other motorsport teams.

Just to correct something above, Gordon Murray is south African. He moved here to design cars, because it is the country that Lotus came from. smile

Not sure if that's moving the mountain or not. wink
