Hi folks,

My sister has a Peugeot 206cc, 1.6 16 valve. It's been stood for around 6 months and as the family 'car person' I was given the task of getting it back on the road.

I have done a 'mini service' consisting of oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and a general look around as well as a good run. The car had a good steady idle before I did the service, bit since doing it the idle has become lumpy and won't settle. It runs fine when moving but it just won't idle, any ideas?

Thanks

Nick

Check all vacuum pipes and connectors to make sure nothing was disturbed or broken during the servicing.

In addition to potential split pipes (maybe a dirty MAF sensor too?), it could also be slightly stale fuel (I think I read somewhere that modern formulations dont age well, additives etc settle out). Could be worth lobbing in some injector cleaner and top it up with fresh fuel, and change the fuel filter if you can?

yes and also make sure there are no air leaks into the air inlet piping downstream of the air flow sensor wink . You can test for this by getting the engine idling then spraying WD40 at each joint in the pipework in turn - a leak will be revealed when the engine revs change...

Also examine the air inlet pipework/ducting for splits and do the same WD40 test on any suspicious areas - you can do this on the vacuum pipes etc (as in quoted post) as well if the main air ducting is sound.

This goes to show why it's not always a good idea to try and work on your own car.

I am not a mechanic so will not work on my car. The last time I tried I drove down the road and the wheel fell off! I had managed to strip the thread on three of the nuts, meaning I only had one nut holding the wheel on.

I was lucky not to die, and so are you. Leave it for the pro's, as they are highly skilled and quallified in working on cars. You are literally risking yours and others lives by trying to work on stuff you don't know about.

It's a well known fact that all French cars hate NGK spark plugs, with no exceptions anywhere. (Seriously though, I have heard of problems with French stuff and NGK plugs). Regap the old ones, clean them, and chuck um back in and see if there's any difference. Might also be you idle control valve is a bit gummed up.

Interesting, I'll look at that too.

Out of interest though, how do you know I've fitted NGK plugs? You been watching me? biggrin

I can see it now - killed by a lumpy idle.
I'd argue that your average home mechanic knows a fair bit more about the mechanical condition of their vehicle than the average joe who takes no interest until its MOT time.

Your post history is enlightening.
It would seem you are a massive danger to other road users.

Like most people every day I strive to be a better version of myself. I do that from learning from both mine, and others mistakes. So I try and impart some wisdom.

Well you didn't learn much after writing off your car because it sounds like you did it again at least a few times. Or does it take a few write offs for the lesson to settle in? wink

Cars are just lumps of mettle. They are insured. I fear not if they get harmed. I live life to the fullest. So I drive like shumacker. Sorry if that upsets you. However I only do this safely.

Ahh my mistake. If I had realised they were SAFE write-offs I wouldn't have said anything.

I have an MX-5 of my own, as well as a TVR thumbup As mentioned in the OP, the 206 is my sisters car.

As for the post about leaving it to the professionals, I hardly think a dodgy idle will be the cause of my downfall. I wouldn't attempt anything that I know I couldn't complete, like brakes or suspension. A simple service however shouldn't be beyond even the most incompetent so called petrolhead now should it rolleyes
