I took my trusty Honda Accord in for an annual service yesterday. I asked the guys at the garage how much it would be for a cam belt change. After much guffawing, they pointed out it has a cam chain. I guess that's a nice surprise hehe.

So, did you ask them what happened to the belt that the chain replaced?

I asked them if I needed to change the air in my tyres. The look on their faces was just spectacular hehe.

Not such good news as you might think. Cam chains have to be changed at some time - possibly more expensive than a belt.
We have a 1.6 FSI Golf which has a stretched cam chain and knackered tensioner at 80000 miles.

Actually I'm surprised the stealers haven't started charging for this.Yes Madam, we recommend you change the air every 2 years, that will be £10 per tyre, thankyou for your custom biggrin

At this mileage that must be an inherent design fault? The MiL's Almera has a stretched chain, common fault apparently. It's on 50k miles.

That said, not much more to change than a belt. I'm getting the MiL's done for £410 including the oil/ filter change that's required.

Don't some places fill the tyres with nitrogen and then charge you for the gas?

Its a new trend from Germany, cheap timing chains.
BMW,Mercedes and VAG cars are all suffering.
As is the BMW/PSA co-developed engine(hpt/VTI) for the Mini and Peugeot 208-308.

BMW seem to have the lions share of the problems at the moment, they know it but they refuse to admit it.

Not new, daughters 2.2 Astra Coupe snapped its chain a while ago, although I suspect the tensioner failed first.
