well done Mazda!
Discussion
Amidst all the bally-hoo in the motoring press in the past couple of years with the eco-boost Ford engine's Mazda have been quietly unveiling some pretty impressive petrols of their own. A flick through What Car (yes some of us read it!) demonstrated the new Mazda 3, a car in which you can buy a n/a Sky-active 2 litre petrol engine which has a combined MPG of 55.4 and co2 of 119, which I think is damned good really. As someone who prefers a n/a petrol engine for day to day driving than a diesel or turbo'd petrol, I think Mazda deserve some credit for keeping the n/a petrol engine alive when everyone else is going over to troublesome turbos. I know most people will buy the diesel, but if you are a private buyer doing 10K a year, something like this makes a lot more sense than your typical 1.6 diesel, especially when it gets to 3 or 4 years old and all the diesel stuff starts breaking.... So well done Mazda, time they were given some credit for once, rather than BMW and Ford who always get the plaudits!
We're seeing a slight reversal of trend back towards petrol as future and very stringent EU pollution constraints may start affecting diesel more than petrol.
But the UK, which was about 10 years behind adopting modern diesel en masse, might also be a few years behind recognising its limitations, so brain washed a lot of people are about diesel being more "economical" irrespective of mileage.
As for reliability, most people buy on "affordable" (lol) PCP anyway so after 3 years, who gives a wonk ?

Major design regression after my MK2 MPS
I think the OP was referring to objective parameters rather than subjective ones like design/style. It's a major improvement IMO on that front.Edited by nickfrog on Monday 4th November 09:13
I've got the Skyactiv 2.0 16v 165PS Engine in my 6 Sport Tourer. I bought the car to replace my old 6, which was the last model type, with the 185PS 2.2d.
I think the new Skyactiv engine is very impressive in terms of economy (it's way better than the Diesel it has replaced), but I still wish I had gone for the Diesel offering. The Petrol engine is very noisy, and needs working very hard to get anything out of it, although it doesn't seem to be to resistant to being pushed along to higher RPM...
Of course, the 6 Estate that I have isn't atall a small car, which may be why the engine seems to require such hard work at times. I'd quite like to try the same engine in the new 3 when it's available for test drives. The new 3 looks like it could be really good too, definitely something for me to consider if I need to downsize from the 6 in the future.
