Mmmmmm I've 235/40 ZR18 Dunlop SportMaxx tyres on my Passat - Directional ones - which no-one can get anymore - they can only get asymmetrical with a different tread. Now, am I right in thinking there's a rule nowadays that you're meant to have the same tyres on the same axle??? Does anyone recommend a particular tyre for this fast estate?? It's a real pain as I've good tread on tyres but got nasty puncture on the one that needs replacing - blah - £200 a pop too........ I;ve always stuck with manufacturer recommended before but as I'm holding onto this 5 yr old car perhaps time to look at alternatives...:-)

Great car!

You can put a different tread pattern on each corner if you like, no legal reason why not.

Have you checked any tyre review websites? Real world reviews are often helpful. I like Michelin Pilot Exalto but I doubt they'll be available in your size.

I've got Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics on mine and they do the job rather nicely, whatever the conditions.
As far as I'm aware, some R36s were delivered with the Dunlops and others with the Goodyears. I've always stuck with the latter and have no complaints.
Not cheap at £160 per corner but they scored pretty well on this year's EVO tyre test, if that provides any further assurance.
Take it easy.

I have Dunlop Sportmaxx RT tyres on my alfa 156 and they are pretty good and excelent value for money.

They are £143 in your size from event tyres

They are a pretty new tyre and they get good reviews too, which is why i chose them http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Dunlop/SportMaxx...

Great car....still miss mine. I had the dunlops like yourself ended up switching the spare onto the car. Get it turned if the assymetric patterns wrong way. When it came to changing after a bit of research. I went over to hankooks v12. Which vw were using as replacement.highly regarded, performed very well and only 145 a corner which they price matched...win. win.
