Sell Me Your Car
Discussion
Do you mean as a lineup of sellers vying to sell you their car based on a set of criteria you set (kinda like the reverse of a 'What car...?' thread) or asking someone if you can buy their car?
If the latter, surely a PM would do? The former, not sure but I don't see why it wouldn't work or break any rules.

Say I am in the market for a car - £10k budget, 4 seats, x mileage etc.etc. would it be legal to start a thread to let other PHers know that you were looking to buy. If they were selling something that fits in-line with your requirements then they can respond to the thread...almost like a 'wanted' advert.
Similar to a 'what-car' but more 'what-car...and do you have one to sell to me?'

Or ...
maybe you could put your criteria into the classifieds search and see what cars are for sale with the criteria you mentioned!!
Personally (I cannot speak for anyone else mind) - if I was selling a car I would probably advertise it rather than trawl through a forum looking for a wanted ad that matches my car!

I am being a little facetious I know... I gather you're more thinking on the lines of if you posted a what car thread then it may entice people to offer a car that until now they had not really been bothered to try and sell.
That does actually occasionally already happen on what car threads from what I can see but people are wary of advertising a car they have for sale (as that is a bit of a no no in forum rules).

I'll go one better, I have a car with 5 seats, only 50k mileage, definitely up for sale for £10k. I hadn't thought about selling it up to now but as your offer was so good I will let you buy my year 2000 Punto
In all seriousness, might be worth going onto the classifieds or autotrader and finding a car yourself. Sure enough, ask for advice of what would be the best in your budget in a thread, but to actually have people selling their cars through a thread is going to generate a lot of daft comments I imagine.

I think I get a little more where you're going with this! And again apologies for my facetiousness.
Your implication here is clear - given a choice of cars (all else equal) you'd pick one that has been owned by a fellow PHer. This as you think its more likely to be looked after or just fellow PHer love? Either way... I think I get it.
Or conversley - you are more interested in cars owned by a fellow PHer as a good example of something you might like as well!
In which case I think that makes even more sense especially if your 'what car' is a little more vaugue.
i.e. I have a budget of x, I need blah (2 seats? space for golf clubs?), also want blah ('fun' to drive, car i can track, cheap to maintain, good residuals, etc) and am interested in what fellow PHers have to offer in both suggestions as to what car I should be looking for and even more so if they have a car that matches what I am looking for for sale.
Tbh - I think this is almost done in what car threads already ... so no reason why you cannot be a bit more explicit about it.
This works especially if you are interested in a potentially wide variety of cars...
That all said - my take is that you're best of seeing a dealer which has multiple cars you are interested in and actually drive them to determine which you like best rather than relying on dubious opinions which will now be biased as the poster will have motivation to convince you that theirs is the correct car.
Though I have never seen the merit in generic what car threads either if I am brutally honest but thats just me as I prefer to make my own decisions than just what other people like/say !!
By all means ask about the pro's/con's of specific models but to me (and this is my opnion only) - asking 'what car' shows a lack of imagination and a question I would expect of a NON Ph'er/ forum reader rather than one who is...
i.e. its the sort of thing my uncle would ask me!

Understood. Although there is a link to a PH profile, it doesnt tell me who are active posters...why not offer your requirements and money to an active PHer directly through the fora?
I could see a driver in this if you were trying to target a particular and rare car, or at least a car of which good examples are very difficult to find. I think that would be better solicited via PM however.
As a general "who wants to sell me their car" thread though, I reckon you'd be disappointed. There are a substantial number of forum users who do not meticulously maintain their cars and keep them clean and polished. Many regard at least one of their cars as a disposable "snotter" and will get rid if it needs much money if at all. Their money and attention goes on something else and the purpose of the snotter is to be used and abused until it's changed.
You'd have no way of assuring yourself that you were buying a PHer's P&J rather than their crap car.
I'd be just as suspicious buying from a PHer as I would anywhere else. The only exception would again be something special that has a level of recorded history on the forum - e.g. you can stalk the seller's posts on the model-specific sections if he/she has used them and garnish what level of maintenance and care they have applied to the car.
I can't really see how a thread would help you much tbh.

It would be career limiting if I sold you leaseplan's car. It would also see me upset Leaseplan quite a lot.
Oh, and I'd probably have some bother with the rozzers too.
Edited for accuracy. This is PH and YOU have no right the use the word "MY" as it's not. Oh, and I'd probably have some bother with the rozzers too.
Anyway, back to the op's problem. Lets say, a PHer hasn't thought about selling his car, but would be prepared to do the OP a favour. I think it's a fair question and I'd be very cross if I was wrong.
