Afternoon all,

A quick question if I may;

Coming up for my insurance renewal, and my current insurer Bell(end) seems to enjoy increasing the price of my premium every year. I know this is common place, but after dealing with them to insure an additional car earlier this year, and also the fact they called me a few weeks back telling me about my excellent new price and the saving over last year (which is 30% increase on last year), I am a little fed up with thier general uselessness and Benny Hill antics. I have been with them for 7 years.

Ideally, I want an insurer who gives good customer service, and will not up my premium every year if I maintain a good driving record (touch wood!) smile

Thinking about Direct Line and Aviva (as may need a multicar at some point in the next 6 months). Are there any other reccomendations?

Apologies for the mudane topic.

Thanks in advance!

Look around every year.

Every insurer will try and weasel out of claims, customer service varies, but all being well you won't need to deal with them.

Get yourself over to go compare and save yourself some money.

Most do seem to offer "new customer discounts" which of course are paid for by anyone who doesn't switch insurer every year.

My new policy starts on 10th November.

My price last year was £560 (2 yrs NCB), renewal emailed from Elephant £780 (3 yrs NCB), what a bargain, cheers!

Rang them, told them to shove it. Lad on phone was sympathetic and tried to bring quote down and managed to shave £100 off, told them again to shove it.

10 minutes entering details into the biggest comparison sites and I had a sub-£400 quote, but with a company with less than complimentary reviews (I won't name and shame) so took the second cheapest from a company with much better customer satisfaction for £410.

There's no reward for loyalty, shop around, for 10-20 minutes work you can save £100's.

Switch insurers, when they ask why simply tell them that you don't like being lied to. Last year my BMW insurance was £385, this year the renewal was £460 with an extra years NCB?? Bearing in mind I'm 16 years claim free, only 3 points that are 4 years old, basically as good a risk as you can get IMHO.

Tried to beat the renewal quote down to save the hassle of changing, got told categorically that £460 was the best possible quote. Managed within ten mins to get numerous quotes of £300ish, so rang back to get my no claims issued & cancel the renewal, funny old thing they managed to quote me £291. I still left, as I don't like being lied to!

Basically the insurance companies will up prices for renewals. They need to offset the lower prices that they use to get new customers in. Also lots of people accept the renewals without really checking or shopping around.

SO, moral of the story - shop around. The best deals are always for new customers. Don't forget that the likes of Direct Line aren't on comparison sites as well...

  • Full Disclosure: I used to manage online marketing for Aviva and Direct Line Group in my past. They hate people that switch so you might as well do it to piss them off **

Elephant/Admiral etc are the most blatant with it - you can get a quote as a new customer from one of the companies in the group then get them to match it for your renewal, utterly stupid but obviously designed to take advantage of people who won't bother.

I have had a very bad experience making a claim with Aviva in the past, FYI.

Which would be great if it wasn't for the fact that you spend an extra 5 minutes filling out the forms for Direct Line, only for them to come back with a completely uncompetitive quote.
You end up thinking "Next time, I won't bother getting a quote from Direct Line".

I'm with LV and funnily enough I shopped around this year and struggled to find anything better without paying upfront or a big deposit. Sure I could have maybe saved £50 or so but I'd have rather automatically renewed and had the hassle-free experience than spend hours on a weekend trying to scrape off some money.

I am young though so it had already gone from £1100 down to £660 on renewal... Which was a win in my eyes biggrin

I just did a direct line quote and saved best part of £100 over my renewal from privilege,

although ended up £30 or so less than privilege would offer through compare the market.

Google Insurance seems to come back with cheaper quotes than CompareTheMarket, Confused etc when I used it the other month.

And don't think DirectLine are any better than anyone else. When I first met my wife she'd been renewing with them for 6yrs. One quote on a comparison site saved her £600 on her next premium.

The Jiffle Queens insurance renewal was automatially lowered by Co-operative insurance this year without any intervention. It was approx 25% reduced so she renewed

I was with Admiral for about 5 years (getting them to price match the lowest quote), then switched this year to Direct Line as Admiral couldn't match their very competetive quote for me. Insurance prices seem to vary a lot from person to person depending on their situation.

Yeah, but it's different for everyone. I've never been with them, as they were too expensive for me (i'm with Admiral) but they're cheaper for some people.

Renewal is always more than a new policy. It's just how the industry works.

It's completely unfair, as it's like going to the pub, you buy one beer, drink it and return for a refill. Only you are now charged more for it.

Do brokers still exist? When I first started driving, many moons ago, I used to use a local broker who would do all the searching for me and all the paperwork. This was in the days before internet comparison sites... probably before the internet at all thinking about it!
About a month before my insurance was due to run out he'd send me a letter listing the quotes he'd managed to get, I'd tell him which one I wanted and sign something, then at renewal time all my new docs arrived at home. For years it only ever went down so I kept using him, (the payment to him was very small). I only stopped using him when I went abroad.
